BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - While the zeros on the scoreboard may not attest to much scoring action on the field, the Indiana men's soccer team took a lot away from a pair of matches against Cincinnati and IUPUI Wednesday night at Jerry Yeagley Field at Armstrong Stadium.
Indiana played the Bearcats and Jaguars in a 60-minute match each with both ending in a 0-0 tie. With just one game left on the spring schedule, head coach Mike Freitag used the matches as an opportunity to get a look at every player on his team in a competitive situation. Twenty-one of the 22 players on the roster saw game action, with Rich Balchan sitting out due to illness.
"It was good to be able to see guys play who have not seen a lot of time on the field," Freitag said. "You never saw our starting lineup out there together. We mixed and matched to give everyone a chance to play. I saw some good things at times, but I would have liked to have seen more passion. They were knocking the ball around out there, but we never saw anything special.
"For quite a few of them, this was their first action for IU. I think we will come back and have a good outing against Akron on Saturday."
Indiana held a 10-5 shots advantage against Cincinnati in game one, led by three attempts for forward Will Bruin, all of which were on goal. In addition, he had a breakaway chance that was called back when the offside flag went up. On another attempt, Darren Yeagle played a thru ball to Bruin, but UC goalkeeper Miguel Rosales had a step on him and snatched the ball off his foot.
Freshman Caleb Konstanski, who joined the Hoosiers this spring after graduating early from Bloomington South, got the start against the Bearcats in the back.
In match two the Hoosiers held IUPUI to just two shots but could not get one of their eight attempts into the back of the net. Joe Tolen, playing in his first game for Indiana, led the way with three shots. Also making their first starts were goalkeeper Nate Mitchell, midfielder Alex Boler, midfielder Max Weston and forward Tim Wylie. Mitchell had one save in 60 minutes of action.
Indiana concludes its spring season on Saturday, April 18, as it travels to Ft. Wayne, Ind. to take on the Akron Zips. These two teams last met in game two of the 2008 season, a match which produced a 0-0 double overtime tie.
