BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The No. 17 Indiana Hoosiers (18-14) cruised past Chatham, 15-0, in the opening round of the CWPA Western Division Championship at Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center. Indiana, the No. 2 seed, was led by freshman Kristin Harmidy, who piled up a career-high five goals, as the Hoosiers were never challenged by the No. 7 seed Chatham.
“We came out from the beginning and established ourselves on both ends,” said Indiana head coach Barry King. “I thought we did a nice job of taking advantage whenever we had opportunities to score.”
The Hoosiers did not waste any time getting things started as senior Maggie Hannon scored from the post :17 seconds into the game, after an assist from sophomore Lauren Wyckoff. Hannon would go on to rack up two more goals early in the first period to help the Hoosiers get out in front for good. Indiana would light up the scoreboard for 10 goals in the opening quarter.
Harmidy recorded two of her scores in the first quarter, and also getting in on the opening period scoring barrage with one goal each were sophomore Nicole Redder, junior Nicole Sands, sophomore Kate Dunn, freshman Dana Mayeron, and freshman Sara Joseph.
Indiana would implement a ball control offensive strategy for the second quarter, as neither team could find the net. Indiana allowed only seven first half shot attempts by Chatham. Freshman Cassie Wyckoff started the contest and finished with five saves. Junior Katie Carson played the second half for the Hoosiers, finishing up with eight stops.
The Indiana defense gave Chatham no glimmer of hope during the final two quarters, as the Hoosiers continued to cruise. Freshman Hanna Eimstad scored in the third quarter after a kick out pass from Harmidy, which was one of her three assists during the game. Harmidy then went on a three goal tear to put Indiana on top, 14-0.
The lone goal in the final period was scored by sophomore Kara Butler as the shot clock expired after a nifty assist from senior Stefanie Winter.
Indiana will take the pool again at 8:15 p.m. against No. 3 seed Mercyhurst, which was an 8-6 winner over No. 6 seed Washington & Jefferson.
Also advancing in tournament play were No. 1 seed Michigan, a 14-2 winner over PSU-Behrend, and No. 4 seed Gannon, which defeated Grove City by a score of 15-7.
Note: Indiana vs. Mercyhurst has been moved from 8:30 p.m. to 8:15 p.m.
