COLUMBUS, Ohio - Led by junior Anita Gahir's sixth-place finish, the Indiana women's golf team finished fifth overall, and third among nine Big Ten teams at the Lady Buckeye Invitational Sunday afternoon at the Ohio State University Scarlet Course.
The host Buckeyes won the event with a score of 895 (295-294-306). Kent State University was second (299-304-302=905), with Washington third (302-308-301=911), Northwestern fourth (299-300-316=915) and the Hoosiers fifth (299-310-310=919).
"I thought it was a very positive performance," said head coach Clint Wallman. "It was good to get to play a challenging course, much like the challenge we will face this week at the Big Ten Championships."
Despite cool and breezy conditions, Gahir matched her top round of the tournament with a 74 on Sunday to finish tied for sixth (74-77-74=225). It was another clean round for Gahir as she posted 12 pars to go along with birdies on four and seven.
"Anita was steady today, as she has been all tournament," Wallman said. "She was hitting the ball really well and overall was solid tee to green."
After a hot start on Saturday, junior Kellye Belcher cooled off a bit with a final-round 82 but still finished 16th with a score of 230 (73-75-82). Belcher was tripped up by three double bogeys but went one under on holes 10 through 15.
Sophomore Cecilia Orevik had her best 54-hole performance of the season, closing out with a 76 to finish tied for 17th (75-80-76=231). Orevik started the round with a bogey on hole two but followed up with a birdie on three and remained at even par through hole eight. She hit par on seven more holes in the round.
"Cecilia is really coming into her own," Wallman said. "She has grown a lot and is more patient and plays to her strengths. It was been wonderful to watch her grow."
Junior Laura Nochta also finished among the top 30 individually, recording her third round of 78 for the tournament to finish tied for 26th (78-78-78=234). Nochta started the round with a bogey on hole three but added a birdie on seven and was back at +1 through hole eight. She added another birdie on 13 but tripped up with another double bogey on 14.
Sophomore Lauren Giesecke posted an 86 on Sunday and finished 64th with a tally of 246 (77-83-86). Struggling throughout the day, Giesecke recorded a par and a birdie on two of her final three holes.
Indiana's third-place finish among the nine Big Ten teams competing at the Lady Buckeye should provide a confidence boost to the team as it heads to the Big Ten Championships in just four days.
"We know we can compete with the best in the Big Ten," Wallman said. " To go out and post a good score and beat Michigan State (today) shows we have the talent to compete with any team. It gives us a good boost and puts us in the right frame of mind for next week."
