BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Varsity Club recognized Indiana 24 student-athletes at its annual Scholastic Achievement Awards dinner on Friday, April 18.
The Scholastic Achievement Award was established in 1979 by the IU Varsity Club to honor and acknowledge the academic excellence of one student-athlete every year in each varsity sport. The award recognizes the student-athlete that attains the highest cumulative grade point average on his or her respective team. An additional award is also granted each year to the Student Athletic Board member with the highest grade point average.
Andrew Allenspach (men's golf), Brittney Hacken (field hockey), and Emily Kasavana (rowing) were also honored with the 2009 Jack D. Tichenor Award. This award was established in 1984 as a tribute to Tichenor, Bloomington publishing company owner, businessman, and entrepreneur. Awarded annually, the Jack D. Tichenor Award honors top male and female student-athletes who hold the highest individual GPA among all varsity sports.
The evening's program included remarks from Scott Dolson, Senior Associate Athletic Director for External Operation, Jennifer Sinclair, President of the Varsity Club Board of Directors, Fred Glass, Vice President and Director of Athletics, and Dr. M. Grace Calhoun, Associate Athletic Director for Academic and Student Development Services.
"While competitive success is extremely important to Indiana, Hoosier Athletics has always been about more than competitive success," said Calhoun. "It has been about scholarship, leadership, character and integrity."
The award recipients will be added to the Scholastic Achievement and Jack D. Tichenor plaques on permanent display in the north lobby of Assembly Hall.
