BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Matching the score of their meeting during the 2008 regular season, the Indiana men's soccer team posted a 2-0 victory over Butler Friday night at Jerry Yeagley Field at Armstrong Stadium. The win improved the Hoosiers' spring record to 2-0.
"We are still a work in progress," said head coach Mike Freitag. "I thought we had a better second half. I am happy with the win, but there is still room for improvement."
Butler had the more dangerous chances early on, including a shot from Jacob Capito on a wide-open net that rolled wide left, but it was IU that took a 1-0 lead in the 37th minute with a goal from Alec Purdie. Daniel Kelly, who earned the starting nod at right back, crossed the ball into Purdie in front of the net where he shot home his second goal of the spring season.
The teams went into the locker room with Indiana up 1-0, but the Bulldogs held the advantage in the shots department, 7-4.
The Hoosiers quickly made it a 2-0 affair at47:35 thanks to a perfectly-placed free kick from Andy Adlard. Taking his shot from the left side, Adlard sent the ball to the back post where a waiting Will Bruin knocked it home. It marks Bruin's first score of the spring season.
The Bulldogs would finish with a 14-11 shot advantage, led by five from Boris Gatzky. Purdie had four for the Hoosiers, along with three from Adlard and Bruin.
Freitag again used the game as an opportunity to take a look at players in different positions, starting Kelly in the back instead of his normal slot up top. Later in the game Chris Haffner came on for Kelly, and Caleb Konstanski took over for Ofori Sarkodie in the back. Nick Blevins saw action in the midfield, and Joe Tolen relieved Purdie in the attack.
Indiana is on the road for its next spring contest as it heads south to face the Louisville Cardinals on April 9 at 7 p.m.
