COLUMBUS, Ind. - Playing through rain, snow, hail and in near-freezing conditions, the Indiana women's golf team still finds itself in contention after two rounds of the IU Invitational at Otter Creek Golf Club in Columbus, Ind.
Indiana is currently tied for sixth at 638 (320-318), 12 strokes behind leader UNLV (317-309=626). Iowa State is second (323-310=633), with Texas (323-312=635), Michigan (332-303=635) and Iowa (322-313=635) tied for third.
"We played in some tough conditions today but I thought overall we played pretty well," said head coach Clint Wallman. "I think if we are patient we will be in a good position to make a move tomorrow. This teams knows this course well and is capable of shooting a good number."
Anita Gahir, the reigning Big Ten Women's Golfer of the Week, leads IU and is tied for 10th with a two-round total of 156 (80-76). After a slow start in round one, Gahir bounced back for the low round of the day for the Hoosiers in round two.
Laura Nochta and Kellye Belcher are within one shot of each other, with Nochta tied for 25th at 160 (78-82) and Belcher tied for 27th at 161 (80-81). Cecilia Orevik also holds a spot in the top 30, finishing the day tied for 30th with a 162 (83-79). Orevik's 79 in the second round was just one of three round for Indiana in the 70s.
Amber Lindgren rounds out the starting five for IU and is tied for 41st with a total of 165 (82-83). The Hoosiers also have three golfers competing independently, with Lauren Giesecke leading the way. Giesecke shot a 163 and is tied for 33rd. She closed out the day with a 79 in the final round.
Freshmen Emily Habbel and Sara Poppas are tied for 82nd with both shooting a 184. Habbel posted rounds of 94 and 90, while Poppas shot 96 and 88.
The teams are scheduled to tee off for the final round on Tuesday at 9 a.m. With overnight temperatures predicted to dip below-freezing weather may delay the shotgun start.
