BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Several members of the IU women's soccer squad have been having successful summer campaigns for their respective teams. Rising senior Jessica Boots and rising junior Leigh Anne Cummings were both named to United Soccer League W-League Team of the Week while rising sophomore Carly Samp led her team to a Region II championship as a member of the U-19 Eclipse Select team.
Boots, a Carmel native, is playing with Colorado of the United Soccer League this summer and had a goal in a 2-2 draw against Real Colorado to be named to the team of the Week on June 10. For Cummings, she put all of her offensive skills on display in recording a hat trick in a 6-0 win for her Long Island team against Western Mass and was also named to the Team of the Week.
Samp, who hails from Barrington, Ill., was on the Illinois-based Eclipse Select U-19 team that won the championship at the Region II Tournament in Sioux Falls, S.D. last week. The team will now travel to Lancaster, Mass., for the national championship that takes place July 22-26.
The Hoosiers will begin their 2009 season Aug. 15 with an exhibition match against Valparaiso starting at 7:30 p.m. at Armstrong Stadium. The regular season opener is on Aug. 21, also at Armstrong Stadium against Wright State with a 7:30 p.m. start time.
