BLOOMINGTON, Ind.-- Indiana University Vice President and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Fred Glass continued his reorganization of the department by strengthening its academic unit when he announced today the promotion of Kelly Noonan to the role of Assistant Athletic Director for Academic and Student Development Services, and the hiring of Amanda Fark, Ed Sears and Michael Greene to athletics academic advisor positions.
Fark and Sears were hired to fill two new academic support positions which were created by funds made available from efficiencies generated from Glass's previously-announced department-wide reorganization as well as the consolidation of three intern roles into a new full-time academic advisor position. Noonan and Greene were promoted into positions made available by the departure of Kimya Massey and the promotion of Noonan.
"Compliance and academic success have been my top two priorities since I joined the department," said Glass. "In beefing up our staff, we have created two new academic advisor positions, which will help ensure that all of our student-athletes get the attention and support they need as they work toward their degrees. Kelly, Amanda and Michael have been outstanding contributors to our staff, and I am confident that Ed will be an excellent addition to the department."
Under the direction of Associate Athletic Director Grace Calhoun, who serves as the leader of the athletics academic and student development services operation, Noonan will collaborate heavily with Assistant Athletic Director Mattie White and Calhoun in the day-to-day operations of the department. Calhoun was recently recognized with a NACWAA National Administrator of the Year recognition.
Noonan joined the Hoosier family in the summer of 2006. Over the past three years, she has served as an academic advisor for men's and women's soccer, women's tennis, softball, women's basketball, volleyball, water polo, field hockey, and men's and women's swimming. Her other responsibilities have included oversight of the tutorial, supervised study, and awards programs, and the management of the part-time and student work force. Noonan previously worked at the University of Missouri with the women's soccer team and Total Person Program while she completed her master's degree in student affairs administration in 2006. Prior to Missouri, she worked at the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) from 2001-2004, serving as the sport administrator for the cross country and swimming and diving championships, and assisted with the men's basketball and outdoor track and field championships. She also worked with the Champions of Character program which promoted character in sport. Noonan graduated from the Tulsa University in 2001, with a bachelor's degree in business and sport administration. The St. Louis native was a member of the women's soccer team at TU and her brother, Pat, was a three-time All-American soccer player at IU from 1999-2002.
Fark came to IU in the fall of 2008 as an intern in academic and student development services. She worked with the CHAMPS/Life Skills program and assisted with the advising of baseball, women's golf, and swimming. Prior to her arrival at IU, Fark earned masters degrees in business administration and sport administration from Ohio University. While pursuing these degrees, Fark was a graduate assistant for the NCAA CHOICES, CHAMPS/Life Skills program at Ohio. Fark served as the Assistant Athletic Director and Assistant Volleyball Coach at Loras College from 2004-2006. A native of Jackson Center, Ohio, Fark attended Elmhurst College and graduated Magna Cum Laude with a bachelor's degree in sociology in 2003. She was a four-year letter winner and was inducted into her alma mater's Hall of Fame in 2008. Upon graduation, she served as the assistant volleyball coach for one year.
Sears comes to Indiana after spending a year serving as an Assistant Academic Counselor in the athletics department at Ohio State University. While in this capacity, Sears formulated academic success plans to help student-athletes from diverse backgrounds become independent learners, mentored at-risk student-athletes, prepared reports and monitored student-athlete eligibility standards. Prior to Ohio State, Sears served as an academic services intern at Ohio University in 2007-08. Sears earned his bachelors and master's degrees from Ohio University in sport science and counselor education, respectively. Sears was a member of Ohio's men's basketball team, a background that should serve him well as he assumes advising responsibilities for IU's men's basketball program.
A native of Stafford, Virginia, Greene joins IU's Academic and Student Development Services unit full-time after serving as an intern for the 2008-09 academic year. During that time he assisted with oversight of the tutor program and assisted the advising staff with support of volleyball, football, water polo, swimming, tennis, rowing, and wrestling programs. Prior to Indiana, Greene served as a graduate assistant in the Athletic Communication Office at Virginia Commonwealth University while earning a masters degree in athletic administration. Greene was a student manager for the men's basketball team at James Madison University and earned his bachelors degree in kinesiology in 2005.
"I am delighted that Kelly has accepted increased responsibilities, Amanda and Michael will move into full-time capacities, and Ed has agreed to join the Office of Academic and Student Development Services," said Calhoun. "Indiana has had a long and proud history of graduating its student-athletes and providing exceptional services that lead to the holistic development of these student-athletes. With the commitment Fred Glass has made to strengthen these programs and the addition of these four individuals in key roles for the unit, I am fully confident that Indiana's student-athletes will achieve even higher levels of excellence in the years ahead."
