LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Indiana field hockey team used goals from redshirt freshman Morgan Fleetwood and sophomore Corey Brautigam for a 4-1 win at Louisville on Saturday, Aug. 22, in the Hoosiers final preseason scrimmage.
Fleetwood put IU on the scoreboard with 10:18 on the clock, on an assist from senior Haley Funk, for the only goal of the first half. Louisville came out of the break and knotted the score, 1-1, on a goal from Tuli Lim at the 35:52 mark. Fleetwood attempted another shot to regain the lead for the Hoosiers, but it was blocked. However, Brautigam netted Indiana's second goal as she tipped it in off of a penalty corner shot for the 2-1 lead. Junior Mutsa Mutembwa assisted on the goal. After each team traded a shot, Fleetwood put in her second goal of the game on a pass from outside the circle with another assist going to Mutembwa with 46:44 on the clock.
The Hoosiers cushioned their lead with a second goal from Brautigam at the 66:26 mark for a 4-1 win.
"I think our main focus is to try and find out as much about ourselves as we can during the preseason," said Indiana head coach Amy Robertson. "We knew this game would give us a good gauge of how people are doing in their respective positions. Between the Ball State scrimmage and today, our main focus was really getting it done and finishing. We've really improved from that end."
Indiana outshot Louisville, 12-10, on the game, but matched the Cardinals in the second half, 7-7. Junior Alex Mann started in goal for the Hoosiers and recorded two saves. Fleetwood led IU with three shots on goal in four attempts scoring two goals. Brautigam tallied two shots on goal in two attempts for her two goals. Senior Elizabeth Schmidt also recorded two shots on goal, while redshirt sophomore Brenna Moeljadi took one shot on goal in two attempts. Mutembwa led the team with two assists, while Funk recorded one.
"With preseason, we're not really focused on the result, but it's always good to get a win and Louisville is a tremendously talented program," Robertson added. "This was one of the most consistent game performances that we have had and I think the prospects are exciting for the regular season."
The Hoosiers open the regular season on Friday, Aug. 28 when they face American University at 11 a.m. in Richmond, Va.
