BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana field hockey team will open the regular season this weekend when they face American University on Friday, Aug. 28 at 11 a.m. ET, and Richmond on Sunday, Aug. 30 at 2 p.m. at Crenshaw Field in Richmond, Va.
Head coach Amy Robertson and the Hoosiers are coming off back-to-back wins in their preseason scrimmages over Ball State and Louisville. On Aug. 19, IU defeated Ball State, 3-0, on goals from redshirt sophomore Brenna Moeljadi (two goals) and redshirt freshman Morgan Fleetwood. Three days later, the Hoosiers traveled to Louisville where they defeated the Cardinals, 4-1, with two goals apiece from Fleetwood and sophomore Corey Brautigam.
Along with Brautigam, Fleetwood and Moeljadi, the Hoosiers return 16 letterwinners, including a class of seven seniors led by Alina Valenti and 2008 second team All-Big Ten honoree Meg O'Connell. Valenti led the Hoosiers in points (17), with O'Connell tallying a team-best 39 shots. The duo also scored seven goals a piece on the season.
IU's first opponent on the weekend has claimed six consecutive Patriot League titles. American recorded a 13-8 record in 2008 and return third-team All-American Christine Fingerhuth, along with six other returning All-Patriot League selections.
Richmond recorded an overall 10-11 record last season, but finished in second place in the Atlantic-10 with a 5-1 mark. The Spiders return 16 letterwinners, including 10 starters. Megan Thompson and Katelin Peterson highlight Richmond's roster as each earned first team Atlantic-10 honors. Peterson was also the A-10 Rookie of the Year.
