FT. WAYNE, Ind. - With goals from Rich Balchan, Alec Purdie and Andy Adlard, the No. 7/4 Indiana men's soccer team closed out its exhibition season with a 3-0 win over DePaul at the National Soccer Festival in Ft. Wayne, Ind.
Balchan gave Indiana a 1-0 lead at 33:07, his first goal of the preseason. Eric Alexander set up the play with a cross to Balchan, with Balchan doing the remainder of the work by splitting the defense and sending a low, hard shot into the lower right corner.
Purdie's goal came just after the half in the 48th minute with a shot into the lower left of the netting. The sophomore brought the ball up and caught DePaul goalkeeper Eric Sorby out of position for the score.
Adlard got into the scoring act just over five minutes later, slipping through unmarked on the left side for the goal at 53:40.
Adlard and Will Bruin had two chances to connect for a goal in the first half with corner kicks from Adlard finding the head of Bruin, but both attempts were stopped by a diving Eric Sorby in goal for DePaul.
Bruin had a total of three shots in the first half, including an attempt that came off a pickup from a DePaul turnover. Sorby was again able to get his hands on the ball to deny the Hoosier sophomore.
Bruin and Adlard led the offensive charge with three shots each as the Hoosiers finished with an 11-10 shot advantage. Indiana also took eight corner kicks to DePaul's five. Freshman Luis Soffner recorded three saves during his 45 minutes in goal, while senior Nemanja Kostic came in for the second half and was relatively untested.
The Hoosiers again used the exhibition as an opportunity to get everyone on the field as 23 players saw action against the Blue Demons.
Earlier in the day the Hoosiers conducted a free clinic with approximately 100 youths at the Hefner Field complex. The IU players and children split up into six different groups with the youths going through various drills at each location. After the event the Hoosiers stuck around to sign autographs.
Indiana opens the 2009 season this Friday against No. 5/3 St. John's at the adidas/IU Credit Union Classic. No. 3/5 Wake Forest and No. 12/10 Notre Dame will start things off a 5 p.m., followed by the Hoosiers and Red Storm at 7:30 p.m. On Sunday, Sept. 6, Indiana and Wake Forest will meet at 2 p.m. in a match broadcast live on the Big Ten Network.
