Opell Finishes Second in 200 Breaststroke at U.S. Open

FEDERAL WAY, Wash. - Indiana University senior Aaron Opell set a new IU record in the 200-meter breaststroke en route to a second-place finish at the 2009 U.S. Open being contested at the Weyerhauser King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way, Wash.
Opell touched the wall in 2:10.38, breaking the old school mark of 2:10.55 set by All-American Kevin Swander in 2004. Opell won the morning prelim session with a time of 2:11.46. Also competing in the event was junior Tyler Lemert (65th- 2:26.93).
Also posting a new school mark was sophomore Nikki White with a third-place finish in the women's 800-meter freestyle. White trimmed another three seconds off her school mark with a time of 8:40.38.
In the men's 1500-meter freestyle, sophomore Ryan Hinshaw posted a time of 15:40.46, which is the fourth-fastest time in school history and gave him a 12th-place finish. In the 200-meter butterfly, sophomore Tyler Shedron took fifth in the B final and 13th overall with a time of 2:00.66. Shedron was 10th in the morning prelims with a swim of 2:00.56. That is the fifth-fastest time in school history.
Jjunior Brittany Barwegen was 7th in the C final and 23rd overall in the 200-meter butterfly with a time of 2:15.86. She was 23rd in the morning swim with a mark of 2:16.08.
Competition at the U.S. Open continues through Aug. 8.
