SOUTH BEND, Ind. - Goals from Lee Hagedorn, Will Bruin and Alec Purdie propelled No. 12/16 Indiana (1-1-1) to its first win of the season with a 3-2 victory over New Mexico at the Mike Berticelli Memorial Tournament at Alumni Stadium in South Bend, Ind.
"We did find a way to score some goals and bounce back," said head coach Mike Freitag. "I know what these guys can do, but I also know we can play better than we did. Hopefully with every game we get better and play smarter. We'll go back and look at film of this game and see where we made our mistakes."
New Mexico took the early 1-0 lead on a goal from Justin Davis at 58:08, but the Hoosiers answered back with Hagedorn's score just 56 seconds later.
Hagedorn's goal came off a thru ball from Matt Wiet. Wiet threaded the ball through open space to Hagedorn, who beat the `keeper 1-on-1 for the tying score. It is Hagedorn's first goal of the season and the fourth of his career. Freshman Wiet picks up his first assist as a Hoosier.
"Overall, I think everyone from the coach to the players is disappointed with how we played today," Hagedorn said. "We are happy to get the win, and we fought hard when we got down, but we let a couple of goals go in that shouldn't have gone in."
The Lobos were back on top at 75:23 as Stephen Brown broke the IU defense and slid a ball past Luis Soffner in the lower left to go up 2-1.
Bruin came right back just under four minutes later at 79:18 with his first score of the year to knot the score at 2-all. The goal can be traced back to a running shot from Rich Balchan that was kicked over the touchline by a New Mexico defender, setting up a corner kick. Andy Adlard served the ball into the mixer, where Bruin out-jumped his defender to head home the ball.
Hagedorn set up the game winner by deftly dribbling the ball down the end line before sending it in to Purdie, who put the ball home for his first career goal.
"We need to learn how to adapt to different team's styles of play," Hagedorn said. "They had a lot of guys behind the ball, which made it tough for us to play through the middle. We have to learn how to get the ball out wide a little more sometimes. Also, we have to be smarter defensively."
New Mexico came after the Hoosiers in the first half, racking up four corner kicks in the first 20 minutes, but Indiana was able to hold its ground each time. Turnovers in the midfield plagued Indiana, as it did not record its first shot until the 31st minute.
With just over three minutes remaining in the first half, Purdie broke free and sent in a shot that sailed just over the top of the crossbar. The Hoosiers finished the first 45 minutes of play with just a pair of shot attempts and no corner opportunities.
After just four five combined shots in the first half, the two teams put up 20 attempts in the second frame, with 11 from the Hoosiers. IU also had all three of its corner kicks in the second half. Bruin led the Hoosiers with four attempts, followed by three from Purdie.
The second half opened with a shot from Davis and a save by Soffner. Eric Alexander put one on frame for the Hoosiers which was caught by Justin Fite. Bruin got his head on an Adlard corner kick in the 53rd minute but sent it wide left.
Adlard was fouled about 25 yards out in the 55th minute and sent in a free kick that forced Fite to make a fingertip shot to his left. The Hoosiers got a corner kick out of hit, but a header from Daniel Kelly was off the mark.
The Hoosiers are back in action on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. as they close out tournament play against Seattle.
