IU Volleyball Wins Fifth Straight, Sweeping EKU

Final Stats

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The winning streak extends to five for IU Volleyball with a 3-0 sweep of Eastern Kentucky (0-8) this morning. Indiana improves to 8-2 on the season after the 25-22, 25-21, 25-22 victory in their first of two matches on Saturday.

Libero Caitlin Cox woke up ready to play in the early 10 a.m. contest, averaging over six digs a set with her match total of 20. Ashley Benson and Mary Chaudoin made heavy contributions defensively as well with seven and five blocks, respectively. Meanwhile Jordan Haverly paced the Hoosiers with 16 kills on the offensive side of the net.

A quick glance at the first-set stat sheet would lead one to believe EKU grabbed an easy win as they out-performed the Hoosiers in nearly every statistical category. They did not, however, out-perform Indiana in doing the little things right, allowing the Hoosiers to post a 25-22 opening-set win. A great call by Volunteer Assistant Coach Peter Chang, instructing Kelsey Hall to execute a short serve just over the net, threw off the Colonel reception and resulted in a service ace as that forced a frustrated EKU Coach Lori Duncan to burn a timeout late in the frame.

Indiana pulled ahead by a seven-point margin at 13-6 in set number two before Eastern Kentucky began to slowly climb back into the match. With the lead dwindled down to 21-20, Benson and Chaudoin combined for three kills to reach the 24-point mark. Eastern Kentucky committed a setting error on the next play, handing the Hoosiers a 25-21 winner.

The third and final set was the closest of all. Though Indiana led for the majority of the frame, a four-point lead at 19-15 was the biggest advantage in the set as Eastern Kentucky scrapped hard to keep it close.
