SETTING THE SCENE
• Indiana continues its five-match road swing with a pair of contests at the University of Akron Tournament.
• The Hoosiers face the No. 1-ranked Zips on Friday at 7:30 p.m., followed by FIU on Sunday at noon.
• The Hoosiers are riding a two-game win streak into the match with Akron and are 2-0 away from Armstrong Stadium this season.
NEWS AND NOTES
• The Hoosiers won the Mike Berticelli Memorial Tournament with a 2-0 record, posting wins over New Mexico (3-2) and Seattle (2-0).
• Will Bruin had a pair of goals and an assist to lead the offensive attack. Lee Hagedorn, Alec Purdie and Andy Adlard also scored for Indiana.
• Purdie's goal in the 3-2 win over New Mexico was the first of his career. It was also the game winner.
• Freshmen Matt Wiet and Kevin Bick each picked up their first points in a Hoosier uniform with assists on the weekend. Wiet assisted on Lee Hagedorn's goal vs. New Mexico, while Bick assisted on Adlard's goal against Seattle.
• Both also earned their first career starts when they were in the lineup vs. New Mexico.
• Freshman Luis Soffner was named the goalkeeper MVP of the tournament after recording 12 saves, including a career best seven in the win over New Mexico.
• Rich Balchan earned defensive MVP honors, while Balchan, Eric Alexander, Will Bruin and Lee Hagedorn were named to the all-tournament team.
• Indiana is now 2-0 away from home this season.
• Bruin leads the way offensively for Indiana in goals (2), points (5) and shots (16).
• Alexander has the best percentage of on-frame attempts with eight of his 10 shots this season on goal.
SCOUTING THE ZIPS
• Akron is 4-0 on the season and ranked No. 1 in most polls with wins over SMU (1-0), Tulsa (1-0), High Point (4-1) and Cincinnati (3-0).
• Freshman Yoram Mwila leads the Zips with a pair of goals, while sophomore Teal Bunbury has a goal and two assists.
• Akron has outscored its opponents 9-1 this year and holds a commanding 63-17 advantage in shots.
• Freshman goalkeeper David Meves has played all 360 minutes to date with six saves, a 0.25 GAA and three shutouts.
• Three of the last four matches between Indiana and Akron have gone to overtime. IU is 1-1-1 in the OT matches.
• Head coach Caleb Porter is in his fourth season at Akron and enters the weekend with a record of 49-11-7. He is assisted by Dave Gifford and Jared Embick.
• Indiana leads the all-times series, 24-3-2. The teams played to a 0-0 double overtime tie in last year's adidas/IU Credit Union Classic.
INDIANA vs. MAC
• The Hoosiers are 50-6-4 against teams that currently play soccer in the Mid-American Conference.
• Indiana is 24-3-2 against Akron; 15-3-1 against Bowling Green; 5-0 against Hartwick; 5-0-1 against Northern Illinois and 1-0 against Western Michigan.
• Indiana's last loss to a MAC team came in 2003, a 1-0 overtime loss to Akron at the Mike Berticelli Memorial Tournament in South Bend, Ind.
SCOUTING THE GOLDEN PANTHERS
• Florida International is 3-2 on the season with wins over St. Thomas (2-1), UNC Wilmington (2-0) and Howard (4-2). The losses have come to Florida Gulf Coast (1-0) and Stetson (3-2).
• Sebastian Frings has five goals on 18 shots this season, and three of his five goals have been game winners.
• Steven Cabas has two goals and two assists for six points.
• Nine of FIU's 10 goals have come in the second half. Five of the seven goals they have allowed have come in the second half.
• Three different goalkeepers have seen action for FIU, with Phillop LaMarre playing 270 minutes, allowing five goals for a 1.67 GAA. Chris LaMarre has been between the pipes for 100:40 minutes, allowing one goal (0.89 GAA), and Shane Lopez has played 79:20 minutes, allowing one goal (1.13 GAA).
• Head coach Munga Eketebi is in his third season at FIU. He is assisted by Matias Asorey and Joe Massi.
INDIANA vs. CONFERENCE USA
• Indiana is 37-11-8 against teams that currently play in Conference USA.
• The Hoosiers are 20-1-2 against Kentucky; 3-3-2 against South Carolina; 2-0 against Memphis; 1-0 against UCF; 5-3-1 against FIU; 1-1-2 against UAB; 3-3-1 against SMU; 2-0 against Tulsa.
• Indiana's last loss to a Conference USA team came in 2007, a 2-1 loss to UAB in Bloomington.
DID YOU KNOW?
• All six of Indiana's goals this season have come in the second half.
• The Hoosiers have not put one in the net prior to the 50th minute this season.
USING HIS HEAD
• In the game of soccer, the focus is usually on the use of your feet. But for sophomore Will Bruin, it has been all about his head so far in 2009.
• Both of Bruin's goals this season have been headers off corner kicks from teammate Andy Adlard.
IT'S A FAMILY AFFAIR
• The match-up between Indiana and Akron really is a family affair, from the coaching staff down to the players.
• Akron head coach Caleb Porter was a four-year letterwinner at Indiana (1994-97) where he was a three-time All-Big Ten selection and made two College Cup appearances.
• Porter then went on to spend six years as an assistant coach at IU, helping the team to NCAA titles in 2003 and 2004.
• Assistant Coach Dave Giffard spent the 2005 season as a volunteer assistant at IU.
• On the field, senior defender Ofori Sarkodie will face off against his brother Kofi, who is a starting defender for Akron. This will be the second and final collegiate meeting between the two, with the series at 0-0-1.
• Freshman Matt Wiet and Akron freshman Zarek Valentin played together this summer on the U-20 U.S. National Team in a pair of friendlies in Egypt.
• Wiet and Akron freshman Brandon Silva were teammates at Worthington Kilbourne (Ohio) High School, as well as the U-18 Columbus Crew Academy team.
MIKE BERTICELLI MEMORIAL RECAP
• Indiana picked up a pair of wins on the weekend with a 3-2 win over New Mexico and a 2-0 win over Seattle at the Mike Berticelli Memorial Tournament in South Bend, Ind.
• The Hoosiers won the tournament with a perfect 2-0 record. Freshman Luis Soffner was named the goalkeeper MVP, while junior midfielder Rich Balchan took home defensive MVP honors. Balchan, Eric Alexander, Will Bruin and Lee Hagedorn were all named to the all-tournament team.
• The Hoosiers' first win of the season was a come-from-behind victory over New Mexico on Sept. 11. Trailing 1-0, Lee Hagedorn scored off an assist from Matt Wiet to tie things up. Then, down 2-1, Will Bruin head home the tying score off a corner kick from Andy Adlard.
• Alec Purdie's first career goal proved to be the game winner when he headed home a cross from Hagedorn in the 87th minute for the win.
• Soffner had a season high seven saves in the win.
• Against Seattle on Sept. 13, Adlard and Bruin hooked up again on another corner kick, with another header that proved to be the game winner, putting IU up 1-0 in the 54th minute.
• Adlard added an insurance score in the 83rd minute, with assists to Bruin and freshman Kevin Bick.
• Bick and Wiet earned their first career starts against New Mexico, and both finished the weekend with assists for their first collegiate points.
BALCHAN NAMED TO TOP DRAWER SOCCER TEAM OF THE WEEK
• Junior Rich Balchan was named to the TopDrawerSoccer Team of the Week on Sept. 14 after a strong weekend of play at the Mike Berticelli Memorial Tournament.
• Balchan was named the defensive MVP of the tournament and made the all-tournament team after helping lead IU to the tournament title with a 3-2 win over New Mexico and a 2-0 shutout of Seattle.
• Balchan is a key cog in Indiana's midfield play, working as a defensive midfielder but also pushing up top when the situation allows.
RANKING THE HOOSIERS
• Indiana ranks among the top 25 in all five polls.
• The Hoosiers jumped four spots in the NSCAA poll to No. 8.
• Soccer Times moved the Hoosiers up six spots to No. 7.
• College Soccer News bumped the Hoosiers up one spot to No. 6.
• Soccer America moved Indiana up six spots to No. 10.
• Indiana is up one spot in the TopDrawerSoccer men's tournament 48 ranking to No. 11.
