ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The Indiana women's golf team shot a 9-over 301 in Sunday's final round to finish eighth at the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational at the UNM Championship Course in Albuquerque, N.M.
Indiana posted a three-round total of 894 (297-296-301/+18). Pepperdine won the tournament at -17 (288-287-284=859), with host New Mexico second (294-286-286=866/-10). UNLV (291-292-300) and TCU (291-291-301) tied for third with a 7-over 883, with Oregon rounding out the top five at +9 (297-293-295).
"This was not exactly finish wanted but I was pleased with how Laura and Anita played today," said head coach Clint Wallman. "They both threw up a good number and carried the team. We can build on this weekend heading into Wisconsin. We need to clean up some short game stuff and then head to University Ridge to take a look at the site of this year's Big Ten Tournament. Overall it was not a bad performance, but it was not how we wanted to finish given how we positioned ourselves."
Senior Laura Nochta led the way with a tie for seventh individually after carding a 1-under 72 on Sunday (75-69-72/216). Nochta was extremely steady over her final 18 holes with single bogeys on seven and 17. She countered those extra strokes with birdies on 11, 18 and four, and pared the remaining holes for her second-straight under-par round.
Senior Anita Gahir tied for 24th with a 1-under 72 on Sunday and a three-round total of 224 (76-76-72). Gahir started the day with a birdie on the par-4 eighth hole and remained at 1-under until a double bogey on 13. A bogey on 16 was followed by a birdie on 18, and she finished up with birdies on two and five to end the round at -1.
Sophomore Pamela Burneski posted a top-30 finish by tying for 45th with a 6-over 79 in the final round (71-77-79/227). Burneski was 1-under after three holes with a birdie on nine but took a bogey on the par-5 10th hole and had double bogeys on 15 and 17. Coming down the stretch she bogeyed one, three and five, but closed the day with a birdie on six.
Senior Kellye Belcher struggled on the final day with an 8-over 81 and finished the tournament tied for 62nd (75-75-81/231). Belcher opened the round with a double bogey on eight but came back with a birdie on 10. Back-to-back double bogeys on 13 and 14, followed by bogeys on 15 and 16 put her at +7 with nine holes to play. Belcher would par six straight before another bogey on five, but ended the day with pars on six and seven.
Junior Cecilia Orevik carded a 78 on Sunday to finish tied for 70th (78-76-78/232). Orevik bogeyed four of the first nine holes and jumped to +5 with a bogey on hole two. She birdied the par-4 sixth hole but ended the day with a bogey on eight.
Indiana returns to the course on Sept. 27-28 for the Lady Northern Invitational in Madison, Wis.
