BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Junior Santiago Gruter and freshman Josh MacTaggart claimed titles at the Hoosier Invitational. Gruter won a three set battle with Bobby Deye of Xavier, and MacTaggart defeated fellow Hoosier freshman Isade Juneau.
Gruter advanced to the final by winning two matches in style, taking a 6-1, 6-3 decision over Brandon Florez of Southern Illinois and a 6-2, 6-3 win over Robert Hall of Louisville. Gruter and Deye went the distance in the first set, as Deye won a tiebreaker 7-3. Gruter battled back and won the second and third sets 6-2, 6-3.
Juneau and MacTaggart, both playing in their first collegiate tournament, played a long two set battle. MacTaggart, who had not dropped more than two games in a set over the first two days of the tourney, saw his toughest test yet in Juneau. The first set went to MacTaggart by a 6-4 tally, and the Wirral, England-native took the second set 6-3 for the title.
The Hoosiers return to action with the UVA Ranked Plus One Tournament in Charlottesville, Va., on Sept. 25. For all things IU tennis, stay tuned to IUHoosiers.com.
