SETTING THE SCENE
• Indiana opens its 2009 Big Ten Conference slate on the road as it travels to Madison, Wis. to face Wisconsin.
• This match will wrap-up a five-game road swing for Indiana. Indiana is 3-1 in matches away from Armstrong Stadium entering Friday's match.
• Indiana is 8-0 when opening Big Ten Conference play on the road (7-0 vs. Michigan State; 1-0 vs. Michigan).
• The Hoosiers are 15-0-3 in Big Ten openers since the league began recognizing the sport in 1991.
• This is the second-straight season these teams have opened Big Ten play against each other.
• This game marks the 100th Big Ten regular season match for Indiana.
NEWS AND NOTES
• The Hoosiers are coming off a 1-1 weekend at the University of Akron Tournament after falling to the No. 1 Zips, 0-1, and defeating FIU, 2-1 in double overtime.
• Will Bruin scored both goals in the win over the Golden Panthers, giving him a team-best four on the season.
• Joe Tolen recorded his first career assist on Bruin's first goal of the day. Darren Yeagle got his first assist of the year on the second score.
• Indiana is now 3-1 away from home this season.
• Bruin leads the way offensively for Indiana in goals (4), points (9) and shots (25).
• Alexander has the best percentage of on-frame attempts (5 or more) with nine of his 12 shots this season on goal.
• Lee Hagedorn has the best percentage of all with 50 percent of his shot attempts (1 of 2) going in the net.
• Indiana is averaging 15.3 shots per game but just 1.33 goals per game and 5.8 shots on-goal per game.
• In tournament play this year, Indiana won the Mike Berticelli Memorial Tournament (2-0), finished second at the University of Akron Tournament (1-1) and third at the adidas/IU Credit Union Classic (0-1-1).
• A total of 3,920 fans were on hand for the season opener against St. John's on Sept. 4, a game which ended in a 0-0 double overtime tie.
SCOUTING THE BADGERS
• Wisconsin enters the match at 2-2-2 after posting a 1-0 win over Oakland and playing No. 9 UC Santa Barbara to a 1-1 tie.
• The Badgers have scored five goals this season while allowing seven.
• They are 1-0-1 at home with a 1-0 win over Western Illinois (Sept. 6) and a 0-0 double overtime tie against Virginia Tech (Sept. 4).
• Brandon Miller is the reigning Big Ten Player of the Week after scoring the game-winning goal against Oakland and the game-tying score vs. UC Santa Barbara. Miller's two goals lead the team.
• Goalkeeper Alex Horwath is the reigning Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week after allowing just one goal in 200 minutes of action this past weekend. Horwath has started all six matches with seven goals allowed for a 1.10 GAA.
• Head coach Todd Yeagley is in his first year with the program. He is assisted by Ernie Yarborough, Keith Tiemeyer and Chris Munroe.
SERIES HISTORY
• Indiana leads the series, 32-3-4.
• Eric Alexander scored the game-winner in the 94th minute in last year's 3-2 overtime win in Bloomington. Neil Wilmarth also had a goal with Alexander on the assist. Wilmarth and Lee Hagedorn assisted on Alexander's game-winning score.
• The Hoosiers had won 14 straight dating back to the 1996 season, until 2007's 0-0 double overtime tie in Madison.
• Wisconsin's last win came in 1995, a 2-0 victory in Madison.
• Indiana is 14-2-2 against the Badgers in regular season Big Ten matches.
• Hagedorn scored the game-winner for the Hoosiers in 2006.
ANOTHER FAMILY MATCHUP
• For the second week in a row, Indiana will be facing off against a team coached by a former IU coach and player. This time it is Todd Yeagley who will be standing on the opposite sideline.
• Yeagley, son of legendary IU head coach Jerry Yeagley, was an assistant at IU from 2004-08 and was a volunteer assistant in 2003. He played for the Hoosiers from 1991-94, earning All-America honors all four years.
• Yeagley won the 1994 Missouri Athletic Club Player of the Year award and played in two College Cups.
• The IU ties don't stop at Yeagley. Assistant coach Ernie Yarborough played four years at Indiana (1992-95), appearing in 20 matches in goal with seven victories and eight shutouts.
• Assistant coach Chris Munroe is also a Hoosier, playing in goal at Indiana from 2004-07. In 30 appearances he recorded 16 victories and 11 shutouts. He was also a first-team Academic All-American in 2005.
DID YOU KNOW?
• All eight of Indiana's goals this season have come in the second half.
• The Hoosiers have not put one in the net prior to the 50th minute this season.
USING HIS HEAD
• In the game of soccer, the focus is usually on the use of your feet. But for sophomore Will Bruin, it has been all about his head so far in 2009.
• Three of Bruin's four goals this season have been headers. Two have come off corner kicks from teammate Andy Adlard, while his third was off a free kick from Joe Tolen.
• Bruin finally used his foot to put home the game-winner against FIU on Sept. 20.
UNIVERSITY OF AKRON TOURNAMENT RECAP
• The Hoosiers finished second at the University of Akron Tournament with a 1-1 record. Indiana fell to host No. 1 Akron (0-1) and defeated FIU, 2-1, in double overtime.
• Will Bruin, Matt Wiet and Ofori Sarkodie were named to the All-Tournament Team.
• Bruin scored both goals in the win over Florida International, punching the ball home in the 68th minute and the 106th minute. Bruin now has two game-winning scores on the season.
• Redshirt freshman Joe Tolen picked up his first career assist on Bruin's first goal, while Darren Yeagle assisted on the game winner, his first of the year and third in his career. It was Yeagle's first assist and first point since the 2006 season.
• The Hoosiers had a 20-9 shot advantage in the match and put up six corner kicks to one for FIU.
• Bruin led the way with six shots, four of which were on goal.
• Freshman Matt Wiet started both matches in Akron, running his streak of starts to four.
RANKING THE HOOSIERS
• Indiana ranks among the top 25 in all five polls.
• The Hoosiers dropped five spots in the NSCAA poll to No. 13.
• Soccer Times moved the Hoosiers down five spots to No. 12.
• College Soccer News dropped Indiana four spots to No. 10.
• Soccer America dropped the Hoosiers six spots to No. 16.
• Indiana is down two spots in the TopDrawerSoccer men's tournament 48 ranking to No. 13.
GAME TIME CHANGE
• Indiana's season finale match against Penn State on Nov. 6 on Jerry Yeagley Field at Armstrong Stadium has had a time change.
• The match will now be played at 3 p.m., moving up four hours from the originally scheduled time of 7 p.m.
• The move was made so the match would not interfere with the IU Hall of Fame induction ceremony that night featuring former Hoosier coach Jerry Yeagley.
BIG TEN DOMINATION
• Since the Big Ten began sponsoring men's soccer in 1991, the Hoosier have dominated the league.
• The Hoosiers are 80-10-9 in regular season matches, tallying nearly 30 more victories than second-place team Penn State (52).
• Indiana has never lost in its Big Ten opener, going 15-0-3 in those matches.
• IU has won 11 Big Ten tournament titles, sharing the 1995 crown with Wisconsin.
• Indiana has also been crowned regular season champion 13 times, including nine-straight seasons from 1996-2004. IU won back-to-back regular season titles in 2006 and 2007.
• Indiana has been the league's goals-against average leader in 15 of 18 seasons, including 2007 when the Hoosiers allowed just two goals in six matches for a 0.31 GAA.
• IU had a league-record 10 Big Ten Players of the Year, including two of the last four seasons.
• The Hoosiers have also boasted the Freshman of the Year three of the last four years, with Will Bruin taking the award in 2008.
IU PLAYS HOST TO 2009 BIG TEN TOURNAMENT
• Jerry Yeagley Field at Armstrong Stadium will be the site of the 2009 Big Ten Tournament, Nov. 12, 13 and 15.
• The tournament gets underway with three quarterfinal matches on Thursday, Nov. 12 at 10 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 3 p.m.
• The semifinals will play at 2 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 13. Both matches will be broadcast live on the Big Ten Network.
• The championship match is set for 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 15 and will also be broadcast live on the BTN.
• Single-session tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for college students and younger.
