MADISON, Wis. - The day began with a 20-minute fog delay and ended before the completion of the second round thanks to thunderstorms as the Indiana women's golf team takes part in the Lady Northern Invitational at University Ridge Golf Course in Madison, Wis.
With one completed round and roughly nine holes of the second round in the book, Indiana sits in seventh place with a 16-over 303. Ohio State leads the field with a 283, followed by Michigan State (291), Purdue (292), Northwestern (297) and Iowa (296) in the top five.
The first round got off to a late start with a morning fog delay, and the competitors were forced to take cover at approximately 6:15 p.m. ET when a storm cell moved through the area. While the storm passed, standing water remained on the greens and daylight was fading quickly. The team will return to the course at 7:30 a.m. CT to complete round two and will immediately follow with the third and final round.
"We did not get off to a good start in round one, but they held it together and made it through the end of the round," said head coach Clint Wallman. "Sometimes you can let things get away from you and you need to get it under control. That is exactly what they did and it carried over into the second round."
Senior Laura Nochta struggled early in round one with a bogey on one and double bogey on three, but bounced back to par the next 12 holes. She recorded her first birdie of the day on 16, but ended the round with a bogey on 18 for a 75 (+3).
Senior Anita Gahir was 1-over after four holes in round one until a double bogey on five and a bogey on six dropped her to +4. She knocked a stroke off with a two on the par-3 eighth hole, but the advantage was short-lived with another bogey on nine. She settled down for pars on the next seven holes but finished with back-to-back bogeys on 17 and 18 to come home with a 78 (+6).
Freshman Pamela Burneski started strong in round one with a pair of birdies on holes two and three to move to -2. Unfortunately that was followed by a string of four-straight bogeys beginning on six and running through the par-5 ninth hole. She made the turn with a birdie on 11 to move back to one over, but again was tripped up with a string of bogeys on holes 13, 14 and 15. Still at 4-over with three holes to play, Burneski closed out on a high note with birdies on 17 and 18 to finish with a 2-over 74.
Senior Kellye Belcher was at +4 after six holes in the first round before posting her first birdie of the day on the par-5 11th hole. A double bogey on 14 pushed her score to +5, but she responded with back-to-back birdies on 15 and 16. She completed the round with a bogey on one for a 4-over 76.
Junior Cecilia Orevik started the first round slowly with bogeys on the first four holes but recorded her first birdie of the day on hole seven. A double bogey on nine put her at +5 after seven holes but she would go -1 over the next seven to move to +4 with four to go. Bogeys on 17 and 18 put her at +6, which is where she finished the round (78).
Playing her first collegiate round, it was a good start for freshman Kate Coons with a birdie on hole four. She dropped to +1 with back-to-back bogeys on six and seven but seemed to gain her footing with pars on the next seven holes. That led into a tough stretch for Coons, beginning with a double bogey on 14. She seemed to recover with a birdie on 15, but hole 16 would be the downfall of her day as she recorded an 11 on the par-5 hole to plunge to +8. She added another bogey on 18 but came up with her third birdie of the round on hole two to finish with an 8-over 80.
"After her trouble on 16, Kate came back with a great tee shot on 17, which is a very difficult hole," Wallman said. "I am very impressed with how she handled herself."
