BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana Baseball team has added a right-handed pitcher for the fall of 2009. Derek Roof (Paducah, Ky./Lone Oak) has signed on to join the Hoosiers for the upcoming season.
Roof joins the Hoosiers after lettering for four years for Lone Oak. As a senior, he posted a 6-4 record and a 2.40 ERA to earn honorable mention all-state. Roof also led Lone Oak to a district championship as a senior. A right-handed pitcher, Roof stands 6-foot-4 and 160 pounds entering his college career.
"Derek comes from a baseball family," head coach Tracy Smith said. "He was a guy that we saw late and immediately felt that he was a guy we want to have because in a couple years, he has a chance to be special."
Roof also posted a 6-4 record on the mound as a junior and helped his team to a regional runner-up finish as a sophomore. An all-academic selection, he also earned one letter in cross country in his high school career.
The Paducah native is no stranger to the Big Ten, as he has had three cousins play college baseball in the conference, Shawn (Illinois), Eric (Michigan State) and Jonathan (MSU) Roof. Jonathan is projected as MSU's starting shortstop this season.
The son of David and Sally Roof has two sisters, Leann MacDonald and Angela Roof. Born on Oct. 8, 1990, he intends to be an exploratory major at IU.
