BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana University volleyball team (5-2) picked up their second win in as many matches on Saturday, sweeping the UIC Flames (2-5) after defeating Murray State (0-6) earlier in the day. Indiana crushed UIC by lopsided scores of 25-19, 25-20 and 25-13.
Jordan Haverly and Ashley Benson each tallied double-digit kills with Haverly pacing the Hoosiers at 13 put-aways. Three different Hoosiers - Benson, Mary Chaudoin and Taylor Wittmer - were atop the blocks column with four rejections each. Speaking of Chaudoin, she had to carry the full setting load as fellow setter Whitney Granado sat this one out after playing extensively during the weekend's first three contests. Chaudoin responded with a consistent effort that resulted in 36 assists and a set-to-kill ratio of .522.
Things looked bleak early on as UIC was ahead by six points at the 15-9 mark. A thundering kill by Benson off the slide ignited a Hoosier turnaround, however. Indiana climbed out of the hole and snagged 16 of the next 20 points for the 25-19 victory.
Benson's hot hand continued in set number two, hammering home four kills on seven errorless swings. Chaudoin racked up an impressive 13 assists in the second stanza alone. A six-point run by IU mid-way through the set lifted the Hoosiers to a 17-11 advantage. Wittmer sent down a pair of attacks down the stretch and guided her Hoosiers to the 25-20 triumph and a 2-0 lead on the scoreboard.
Indiana went for the jugular in the final frame, hitting .300 while limiting the Flames offense to a -.037 attacking percentage. Freshman Samantha Thrower entered the court late in the set and delivered with kills on both of her attack attempts. One of those Thrower kills came as a result of a great dig by sophomore Jessica Weeg which placed the table for the IU point. Thrower's second termination served as the final bell and 25th point of the set, giving IU a 3-0 sweep.
The Cream and Crimson hit the road next weekend for the Hampton Inn Invitational, hosted by Ohio University. In addition to facing the defending Mid-American Conference Champion Ohio Bobcats, Indiana will also take on Missouri State, Delaware and Eastern Kentucky while in Athens, Ohio.
