LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Senior Alina Valenti netted two goals to lead the Indiana field hockey team to a 2-1 win over No. 13 Louisville on Sunday, Sept. 6, at Trager Stadium. The Hoosiers' (3-1) win was its second of the season over a ranked opponent after defeating No. 14 American, 2-1, on Aug. 28.
After a slow first half, the Hoosiers got on the board at 40:08 as Valenti scored on a rebound from the Cardinals' goalkeeper as redshirt freshman Morgan Fleetwood put in a shot at the 40:10 mark. With 46:47 on the clock, Louisville's Karah Nall tied it up as she tipped in a penalty corner shot to even the score at 1-1. Just over two minutes later, Valenti scored again to give Indiana a 2-1 lead as she netted a shot on a pass across the right side of the cage to the left post with the assist going to Fleetwood. For the remainder of the half, the Cardinals took two shots to match the Hoosiers, but a block to one and a save by IU's Alex Mann in goal gave IU the 2-1 win.
Valenti scored her two goals on five shots, all of which were on goal. Fleetwood tallied three shots with two on goal and recorded one assist on Valenti's second goal. Senior Haley Funk also recorded a shot in the game. Mann registered four saves in 70:00 minutes in goal.
Louisville tallied 11 shots to Indiana's nine on the game.
The Hoosiers return to action next weekend when they travel to North Carolina to face Davidson at 3 p.m. ET on Saturday, Sept. 12, and Wake Forest at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
