BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana junior defender Mutsa Mutembwa was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week after helping the Hoosiers knock off No. 13 Louisville, 2-1, on Sunday, Sept. 6.
Mutembwa posted two big defensive saves against the Cardinals in Louisville. She picked up her first save on Louisville's first shot of the game at the 5:36 mark. She tallied her second at the 17:29 mark on another shot by the Cardinals. Her two defensive saves helped keep U of L scoreless for the entire first half.
The Hoosiers also played at Ohio on Friday, Sept. 4, and Mutembwa tallied four shots, two of which were on goal.
This week's honor is the first for Mutembwa and the second for the Hoosiers as junior goalkeeper Alex Mann earned Defensive Player of the Week honors last week. IU's win over Louisville was it's second over a ranked opponent this season, after defeating No. 14 American, 2-1, on Aug. 28, which was Indiana's first win over a top-20 foe since Nov. 3, 2006 when the Hoosiers defeated then-No. 7 Penn State, 1-0, in State College.
Indiana returns to action this weekend when they travel to North Carolina to take on Davidson on Saturday, Sept. 12 at 3 p.m. ET, and No. 2 Wake Forest on Sunday at 2 p.m.
