BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -
The No. 19 Indiana (0-2, 0-0 CWPA West) women's water polo team rallied late against No. 6 San Jose State, but could not overcome an early five goal deficit, falling 8-6 in their second game at the Michigan Kick-Off.
Jakie Köhli and Nicole Redder led the way in the scoring department, tallying a pair of goals each. Kelsey Campbell and Kym King scored one goal apiece for the Hoosiers. King's goal marks the first of her collegiate career.
Cassie Wyckoff started the game in the cage and finished with nine saves on 27 Spartan shot attempts. Wyckoff also grabbed a pair of steals in a full 32 minutes of action.
San Jose State controlled most of the opening half, scoring two first period goals, followed by three consecutive scores in the second. Indiana's first goal came with 2:31 left in the second period as Köhli converted after an assist from Nicole Sands to make it 5-1.
Early in the second half, Wyckoff connected with Köhli on a long outlet pass, giving her a one on one chance, but the San Jose State goalkeeper made the stop. The Spartans then scored a one on one goal of their own to make it 6-1.
The Hoosiers began to mount their charge midway through the third quarter, with Redder and King scoring to pull within three heading into the final period. Redder's goal came on a power play after a cross pass from Campbell. King found the net on a high arcing lob that sailed just over the Spartan goalkeeper.
Lauren Wyckoff earned a key penalty shot early in the fourth, and Köhli capitalized by hammering home the goal to make it 6-4, but it was too little too late for the Hoosiers. The two teams exchanged goals the rest of the way as the Spartans hung on for the win.
The Hoosiers will cap the weekend with an 11:45 a.m. ET meeting with Colorado State on Sunday in Ann Arbor, Mich.
