SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The Indiana University women's golf team is currently tied for third after 36 holes of the William K. Warren Irish Invitational at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind.
The Hoosiers recorded rounds of 311 and 301 for a score of 612. The host Fighting Irish lead the field at 603, followed by Ohio State at 605. Indiana is tied with Kent State, with Toledo (615) rounding out the top five in the 13-team tournament. Play concludes with an 18-hole single round on Sunday morning.
"In the first round the conditions were tougher, but in the second round I thought we were on the verge of a really good performance," said head coach Clint Wallman. "I just think we got tired toward the end."
Sophomore Jacqueline Yanch is tied for ninth after posting scores of 76 and 74 (150) on Saturday. Yanch's 74 is a season-low round and she was one of two Hoosiers to go as low as 74 on the day. Junior Kristtini Cain is having her best tournament since joining the IU program this fall, finding herself tied for 21st with a two-round score of 154 (76-78). Her first-round 76 ties her season-low round.
Freshman Lindsay Gahm, competing in her first collegiate tournament, is tied for 29th with a score of 156 (81-75). After a 9-over 81 in the first round, Gahm bounced back with a solid 3-over 75 in round two.
Sophomore Kate Coons is just one stroke back from Gahm and is tied for 31st with a 157 (83-74). Coons also rallied from a disappointing first round to tie Yanch for the Hoosier low round of the day. Sophomore Pamela Burneski is also tied for 31st at 157 (78-79).
"One of our strengths is our balance," Wallman said. "But we still need to find a way to shave one or two strokes off our totals. I think this performance today bodes well for tomorrow's final round."
Senior Lauren Giesecke is competing as an individual and is tied for 37th after rounds of 83 and 75. Today marked Giesecke's first competitive rounds of the 2010-11 season.
