BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - For the first time in his Indiana career, sophomore goalkeeper Luis Soffner is the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week, the conference office announced Monday.
Soffner picked up the honor after helping the Hoosiers shut out No. 10 Michigan State in a 3-0 victory Sunday in East Lansing. Soffner and his defensive counterparts limited the high-scoring Spartans to just six shots, only one of which was on goal. Michigan State managed just two shots in the second half of play and was unable to add to its league-leading goal total of 33. It was Soffner's third shutout of the season, two of which have come against ranked opponents. Soffner also tallied a pair of saves in a 1-1 draw at Kentucky last Wednesday night.
With the win at Michigan State the Hoosiers are 8-4-2 overall and 3-0-1 in Big Ten play, putting them in the driver's seat for the conference regular season title. Indiana closes out its regular season home schedule this week, beginning with a matchup against No. 7 Butler on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. The Bulldogs enter the match undefeated at 13-0-1.
Indiana will then have a chance to clinch the Big Ten title on its home field when it plays host to Northwestern on Sunday at 5 p.m. A win will give the Hoosiers the regular-season title outright.
