BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Despite a late comeback in the second half, the Indiana field hockey team suffered a 5-2 loss to No. 12 Michigan on Senior Day in Bloomington. Redshirt junior Brenna Moeljadi scored in the 47th minute and freshman Mariella Grote scored in the 48th minute, which cut the Wolverines lead in half. However a late goal in the 62nd minute sealed the win for Michigan.
The Wolverines' (12-6, 5-1) offense got an early start in the first half, picking up four consecutive corners, however the Hoosiers (9-8, 1-5) behind Moeljadi held strong as she recorded two defensive saves to help keep the score 0-0. In the 10th minute, Michigan broke through to take a 1-0 lead. The Wolverines added to their lead with goals in the 28th and 33rd minutes to head into halftime with a 3-0 advantage.
Michigan came out of the break and added to their advantage with a goal in the 44th minute to take a 4-0 lead, however, Moeljadi netted her sixth goal of the season to cut the Wolverines lead to three, 4-1. Then in the 48th minute, Grote took a pass on the right side of the circle from redshirt sophomore Morgan Fleetwood to score her first goal of the season, splitting the deficit in half, 4-2. However, Michigan sealed the win and ended the Hoosiers' comeback as it scored the final goal in the 62nd minute for the 5-2 win.
It was a tail of two halves, as Michigan outshot Indiana, 11-2, in the first half, but the Hoosiers held a 5-4 edge in the second stanza. The same went on penalty corners as the Wolverines earned six to IU's one in the first half, however the Hoosiers' picked up four corners to Michigan's one in the second half.
Moeljadi led Indiana with one goal on five shots and recorded two defensive saves. Her four defensive saves on the season ties Mutsa Mutembwa (2009) and Morgan Albini (2002) for second in Indiana's single-game record book. Grote scored on goal on one shot, while Fleetwood recorded the assist on the Grote goal. Junior Becky Pany played 70:00 minutes in goal and recorded two saves.
The Hoosiers will now wait for seeding of the 2010 Big Ten Field Hockey Tournament, which opens on Thursday, Nov. 4, in Evanston, Ill.
