OMAHA, Neb. - The Indiana men's soccer team tacked two early goals on No. 11 Creighton but it was a second-half score that was the difference in a 3-2 victory over the BlueJays at Morrison Stadium Saturday night.
Indiana improves to 6-4-1 on the season and hands Creighton (8-2) its first home loss of the season.
"It was a great result tonight, coming here and playing a very good Creighton team," said head coach Todd Yeagley. "For our guys to come in here and get a result, not many teams are able to do that.
"We had some very nice first half goals, but in the second half the worst-case scenario happened and we gave up a goal in the first minute. They gained momentum and confidence, and then it was a dogfight in the second half."
Junior forward Will Bruin gave Indiana a 1-0 lead at 28:57 when he sent in a flick header off service from freshman Harrison Petts. It was Bruin's team-leading ninth goal of the season. Just under two minutes later at 30:50, Bruin put the Hoosiers up 2-0, hitting the double-digit tally in goals for the first time in his career. Junior Alec Purdie beat the left defender and took it into the 18. He crossed the ball into Bruin who knocked it home.
Despite playing with just 10 men, Creighton needed just 13 seconds in the second half to cut Indiana's lead to one with a crossing shot from Ethan Finley to make it 2-1 Hoosiers at 45:13.
The Hoosiers were clinging to the one-goal lead until Purdie gave them some breathing room at 66:11 with his second goal of the season. Senior Daniel Kelly played a ball over the top to Purdie, who chipped it over Creighton goalkeeper Brian Holt for the 3-1 lead.
The BlueJays made it interesting when Finley scored his second goal of the game in the 88th minute to cut Indiana's advantage back to one.
Junior goalkeeper Nate Mitchell made his first-ever regular season appearance, earning the start between the pipes. Mitchell was tested early, coming out to stop a 1v1 attempt from Dion Acoff less than five minutes into the match for his first career save. Mitchell made a sprawling save to his left on a Jose Gomez shot at 14:02.
With 35:39 to play in the first half, freshman Jacob Bushue and Creighton's Greg Jordan knocked heads at midfield, stopping play for a minute. Bushue was able to jog off the field but had to be replaced by senior Cameron Jordan. After getting patched up on the sideline Bushue was able to return to the field in the first half.
Junior Chris Estridge had Indiana's first shot of the match, weaving his way into the 18 to take an uncontested shot that he sent high. Just a minute later Petts sent in a ball across the goal which landed just behind a waiting Bruin.
At around the 23 minute mark, Indiana had a free kick from 35 yards out with Bushue flicking on service from junior Tommy Meyer, sending the attempt just wide left.
Indiana gained a man advantage at 35:57 in the first half when Creighton's Jose Gomez was shown a red card for a play on Bushue.
Creighton held a 9-7 shot advantage at the half, with Bruin taking three of the Hoosiers' seven shots. Mitchell went into the break with two saves.
The Hoosiers will take a break from mid-week play, returning to Big Ten action on Saturday, Oct. 16 when they play host to the Michigan Wolverines at 8 p.m. ET. The match will be broadcast live on the Big Ten Network.
