LAST TIME OUT
Three Hoosiers reached double-digit points, led by 20 points from junior Jori Davis, but it wasn't enough as the eighth-seeded Indiana women's basketball team fell to ninth-seeded Illinois, 59-53, in the first round of the Big Ten Women's Basketball Tournament at Conseco Fieldhouse on March 4, 2010.
Davis netted 7-of-18 from the field for her 20 points, and added five rebounds, four steals and three assists in 38 minutes. Senior Jamie Braun scored 13 points on 5-of-16 shooting from the floor with a pair of 3-pointers, and added eight rebounds, two steals and an assist in 38 minutes. Sophomore Ashlee Mells netted 10 points off the bench and added three rebounds and two steals in 15 minutes.
The Illini opened the game with a layup from Jenna Smith, only to see IU answer with a 3-pointer from Braun at the 19:26 mark to take a one point lead, but it was the Hoosiers' only lead of the game as Illinois led by as many as six, 22-16, with 8:58 to go in the first stanza. However, the Indiana outscored Illinois, 9-4, in the final eight minutes to head into the break down by just one, 26-25.
Illinois came out hot in the second half, using a 9-2 run in the first three minutes to take a 35-27 lead. Jumpers from Davis and redshirt freshman Sasha Chaplin cut the Illini's lead to four, 35-31, with 15:51 on the clock, but a 17-12 run increased their advantage to nine, 52-43, with 6:26 to go. A jumper from Davis at the 3:38 mark sparked a Hoosier run that brought IU within two, 53-51, with 30 seconds remaining. However, Illinois held the edge at the free throw line, sinking six for the 59-53 win.
The Hoosiers shot 27.4 percent (20-73) from the floor on the game, but sank 81.8 percent (9-11) from the line. Illinois edged IU on the boards, 47-45, but outscored the Hoosiers in the paint 30-24. Indiana forced Illinois into committing 25 turnovers, while tallying 11 steals on the game.
