BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana men's soccer team was awarded an at-large berth into the 2010 NCAA Tournament as the No. 14 seed and will face the winner of the Bradley/Tulsa first-round match on Sunday, Nov. 21 at 6 p.m. ET at Armstrong Stadium.
"Getting the bye is very important," said head coach Todd Yeagley who will be making his first NCAA Tournament appearance as a head coach. "It gives us time to rest and more time to prepare for our opponent. Tulsa and Bradley are two very good teams and you know this time of year you are going to be playing good teams no matter what round we are in. We will prepare for both and get ready for a tough one on Sunday."
"It is great to get a seed, and tournament time is always exciting," said senior captain Andy Adlard. "We just have to take it one game at a time from here on out."
Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for youths and IU students. Tickets can be purchased at the box office on game day.
The Hoosiers finished the regular season with a 9-7-2 record, 4-1-1 in Big Ten Conference action which earned them their 14th Big Ten regular season title. Indiana faced one of the toughest schedules in the nation as 10 of Indiana's 17 regular-season opponents made the tournament field, including seven teams that earned a top 16 seed.
"Right where we sat, I thought if we were going to be seeded it would be in that 12-14 range," Yeagley said. "I know the RPI and quality of wins we had would help us, and they did. Overall, I am pleased with the seeding but the main thing is it gives you that extra round to rest and a home game. We will just go one game at a time and see where it takes us."
Five of the seven Big Ten teams made the tournament field, led by No. 10 seed and Big Ten Tournament champion Michigan. The Hoosiers are next as the No. 14 seed, followed by No. 15 Penn State and No. 16 Ohio State. Michigan State will play a first-round game against Oakland.
The Hoosiers are making their 24th-straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament and 35th overall. Indiana has an NCAA-best .742 (76-25-4) winning percentage in the tournament, while the 76 victories is also tops in the NCAA. Indiana has appeared in 17 College Cups, which leads all Division I teams, and won seven national titles, most recently in 2004.
Looking ahead to Sunday's potential matchups, Indiana is 0-0-1 all-time against Bradley. The teams' only meeting came in the second round of the NCAA Tournament in 2007, with the Braves advancing on penalty kicks after the game ended in a 1-1 tie.
The Hoosiers boast a 2-0 record against Tulsa, defeating the Golden Hurricane by a 4-0 score in the quarterfinals of the 2004 NCAA Tournament. Indiana defeated Tulsa by a 2-1 score in overtime during the 2006 regular season.
