EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Indiana University volleyball team (19-10, 7-10 Big Ten) stumbled Friday night in East Lansing, Mich., coming out on the wrong end of a 3-1 tally (26-28, 21-25, 25-22, 11-25) against the Michigan State Spartans (13-15, 5-12).
Indiana had its chances, dropping a two-point first set in extra time, 28-26; and also taking the third frame, 25-22.
The Hoosiers found themselves in an early hole to begin the night, falling behind 3-0 immediately and trailing by as many as five points. Those deficits were just merely small obstacles, however, as Indiana battled back to earn a set point at 24-23 following a kill by Kelci Marschall. Jordan Haverly was a one-woman wrecking crew in the IU comeback, terminating nine kills on 20 swings with just one error for a .400 hitting efficiency. Indiana then managed to fend off a pair of set points moments later before finally succumbing to the Spartan advance in a 28-26 final score.
It was the Hoosiers turn to jump ahead 3-0 in the second stanza, but the edge was short-lived as MSU snagged the next five points and eventually rolled to a 25-21 winner.
Indiana emerged from the locker room with a hop in their step, blazing the Spartans for a .345 team attack percentage (16-6-29) in the third set. Haverly and Ashley Benson combined for 10 kills while Ivie Obeime got in the act as well with three put-aways. Throw in a solid defensive effort for IU and it resulted in a 25-22 Hoosier triumph.
The Hoosiers were owners of a 4-3 advantage in set number four just before the wheels completely fell off. Michigan State won the next 13 consecutive points to leap past IU, 16-4, en route to a 25-11 finale.
With just three matches remaining in the regular season, the Hoosiers still have some work to do before Selection Sunday on Nov. 28. It starts Saturday night in Ann Arbor, Mich., when IU takes on the Wolverines in a 7 p.m. contest.
