BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana University volleyball team (18-7, 6-7 Big Ten) picked up its third victory over a top-20 opponent this season, downing #19 Minnesota (17-8, 7-6) in four sets (25-22, 26-24, 21-25, 25-22) Friday night at University Gym.
The win also marks the Hoosiers fifth in a row when playing at home. Overall, the Cream and Crimson own an 8-1 tally inside U-Gym during the 2010 campaign.
Sophomore outside hitter Jordan Haverly posted yet another double-double, her sixth of the year, compiling 24 kills and 15 digs. Libero Caitlin Cox joined her atop the digs category, also digging 15 Gopher attacks. In the defensive front court, IU stuffed 13 blocks, led by Ashley Benson and her nine swats (two solo).
Mary Chaudoin led all players with 35 assists on the offensive side of the net. Haverly carried much of the offensive load, putting away 24 of her 63 attempts. Benson also terminated double-digit kills, blasting 15 winners for the Hoosiers.
Things looked bleak early for IU as the Gophers owned a four-point lead as late as 13-9 in the opening set. That is when Indiana ripped off six straight points, however, to go ahead 15-13. Haverly continued to pound away down the stretch, totaling six kills in the 25-22 Hoosier first-set win. In addition, Benson dominated the play at the net evidenced by five blocks in first set alone.
Minnesota's four-point lead came much later in the second stanza, occuring at the 22-18 mark. The Hoosiers battled back once again though, making an 8-2 run to win the frame, 26-24. Indiana fended off back-to-back-to-back set points en route to digging themselves out of a 24-21 hole. The Hoosiers five consecutive points to win it came via three Benson kills, a Haverly kill and Gopher service error.
Haverly went nuts in set number three, stroking nine kills. Indiana was unable to keep pace with the Gophers though as Minnesota's offense swung at a .423 clip for the set.
Indiana finished off the Gophers in the fourth frame, grabbing the first three points of the set and leading the rest of the way.
The Hoosiers are back at it Saturday night, playing host to the Iowa Hawkeyes (6-16, 1-12) for a 7 p.m. match-up.
