LEWISBURG, Pa. -
The No. 19 Indiana Hoosiers (5-4, 0-0 CWPA West) continued their steady play at the Bison Invitational as they defeated Villanova, 11-2, on Saturday afternoon. The Hoosiers notched their fourth consecutive win of the 2010 season, behind strong efforts on the offensive end by Jakie Köhli and Kara Butler.
"I thought we did a nice job of executing, both offensively and defensively," said Indiana head coach Barry King. "We're looking forward to carrying this effort into tomorrow."
Köhli led the Hoosiers in scoring with her second four-goal performance in a row. Butler scored a career-high three goals in the winning effort. Junior Jenna Roe notched the first two goals of her Hoosier career, each coming in the fourth quarter. Kelsey Campbell and Nicole Sands added one goal apiece.
Katie Carson started in the cage and collected 12 saves in a complete 32 minutes of action.
Köhli scored the first pair of Hoosier goals in the contest in the first quarter, converting a pair of penalty shots after Lauren Wyckoff and Butler each earned a five-meter. Indiana led 2-1 heading into the second period before going on a three goal run to separate themselves for good.
Köhli returned the favor early in the second quarter by earning a five-meter penalty of her own, which Butler converted. It took 28 seconds for the Hoosiers to find the net again, as Campbell scored from close-range after a cross from Nicole Redder.
Indiana used a stifling defense throughout the game that resulted in season-high 17 steals. The steady defense consistently led to scoring opportunities for the Hoosiers.
Carson recovered a missed shot, threw a long outlet to Köhli, who fired home her third of the game to give the Hoosiers a 5-1 lead early in the second quarter. Following a Villanova goal, the Hoosier defense would strike again, as a Wildcat shot was blocked by the outstretched hand of Campbell, giving Carson the opening for another outlet pass. Butler hauled in the pass and fired it past the Villanova keeper to give Indiana a 6-2 edge at the break.
Carson and the Hoosier defense held the Wildcats scoreless in the second half, while adding five goals to widen the final margin. Butler scored the first goal of the third quarter on a post-up turnaround shot after a Wyckoff assist. Köhli then threw a cross to Sands who notched her second goal of the weekend. The Hoosiers went up 9-2 heading into the final quarter after Köhli lofted a floater past the goalkeeper to secure her fourth goal.
Roe was the only fourth quarter scorer for either team, finding the cage after assists from Sara Joseph and Kym King.
The Hoosiers will put their four-game winning streak on the line at 8:30 a.m. ET on Sunday against Siena. Indiana will conclude the weekend with a 12:15 p.m. ET meeting with tournament host, Bucknell.
