Pair of Hoosiers Receive Weekly CWPA Awards

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -
Two members of the No. 19 Indiana University (7-4, 0-0 CWPA West) water polo team earned weekly CWPA honors for their play at the Bison Invitational on Feb. 13-14, the conference announced today. Sophomore Cassie Wyckoff was named the Western Division Defensive Player of the Week and junior Katie Black received the Western Division Rookie of the Week award.
The pair helped propel the Hoosiers to a 4-0 mark in Lewisburg, Pa., including wins over Marist, Siena, Villanova and tournament host Bucknell. Indiana outscored the opposition by a 49-17 margin during the tournament and is currently on a six game winning streak.
Wyckoff was consistent in the cage for the Hoosiers, making 28 saves on 64 shot attempts during 74 minutes of action. She also recorded one assist and three steals. In 26 minutes against Marist, Wyckoff notched ten saves and a steal while allowing only two Red Fox scores in the 9-3 Indiana victory. She added six saves and an assist in 16 minutes during the Hoosiers' 16-5 win over Siena.
Wyckoff rounded out the weekend with a stellar performance against Bucknell, racking up 12 saves on 26 Bison shot attempts in the 13-7 win. She also grabbed a pair of steals in a complete 32 minutes of action. She has recorded double-digit saves in four games this season and has 74 saves in 210 minutes of play.
Black, a transfer from Sierra Junior College, finished the weekend with three goals, one assist, and four steals. Each of her three scores and an assist came in the win over Siena. She also made three steals in the 11-2 Hoosier win over Villanova. She also collected a steal against Marist. The three goals and three steals were single game season-highs for Black.
Black has recorded five goals, five assists, eight steals, and one earned kick-out during the 2010 season, while earning playing time in each of the Hoosiers 11 games.
Sophomore Jakie Köhli was also listed on the Western Division Player of the Week Honor Roll for her play at the Bison Invitational. She recorded 12 goals, 6 assists, 11 steals, and two earned kick-outs.
The Hoosiers are idle for the next two weekends before hosting the Elite Eight on March 6-7 at Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center.
