BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -
The No. 16 Indiana Hoosiers (14-7, 1-0 CWPA West) women's water polo team cruised past Gannon, 13-1, in their first CWPA Western Division contest of the 2010 season at the Fluid Five at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center. Indiana was fueled by hat tricks from Jakie Köhli and Lauren Wyckoff as the Hoosiers improved to 14-0 all-time against Gannon.
"It's always nice to start conference play with a solid team effort," said Indiana head coach Barry King. "We had good performances from many different players."
The Hoosiers also got two goals from Kate Dunn, as well as one score apiece by Kara Butler, Kelsey Campbell, Megan McAuley, Kelly Palmberg, and Jenna Roe. Indiana used three goalkeepers in the contest, with Katie Carson starting and collecting five saves and one steal. Cassie Wyckoff came on in the third period and notched three saves. Freshman Liza Dernehl grabbed her first career save during the fourth quarter in the win.
Campbell dished out two of her career high-tying three assists in the opening two minutes of the contest to Butler and Lauren Wyckoff, with each connecting from close-range to give Indiana the early two goal lead. The Hoosiers continued to apply the pressure early on as Palmberg converted on a power play after an assist by Wyckoff. Köhli ended the four-goal opening stanza with a score after Hanna Eimstad found her open on the weak-side.
Dunn's two goals came back-to-back in the second quarter and tied a career high for the junior from Worthington, Ohio. The first score came on a power play as she connected after an assist by Jenna Lee Tameris. Her second goal came 27 seconds later when Köhli rotated the ball to Dunn who fired it in to give Indiana a 6-0 lead.
The Hoosiers ended the opening half run with a Campbell breakaway goal after a long assist by Wyckoff. Wyckoff finished with three helpers, which marks her ninth multi-assist game of the season.
Wyckoff asserted herself offensively in the opening minutes of the third, connecting on her final two goals of the contest, both on assists by Nicole Redder. Wyckoff has racked up three goals in four of the last six games for the Hoosiers.
Freshman Megan McAuley upped the Indiana lead to 10-0 midway through the third period with the first goal of her Hoosier career. Roe followed it up with a post-up goal after an entry by Dana Mayeron.
Gannon found the net with 2:32 remaining in the third quarter, scoring on one of their 11 power play opportunities in the contest to end the quarter trailing the Hoosiers 11-1.
Köhli was the only scorer in the final stanza, notching a pair from long-range on assists by Campbell and Wyckoff. Köhli improved her season total to 62 goals which leads the nation and also ties Maggie Hannon for fifth on the Indiana all-time single-season scoring list. Brooke Zimmerman holds the season record for goals scored with 77 in 2008.
The Hoosiers will compete in their second CWPA Western Division contest of the season at 8:00 p.m. ET this evening against Mercyhurst. Seniors Katie Carson and Kelly Palmberg will be honored prior to the contest.
