BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -
Jakie Köhli scored five goals and Katie Carson collected 12 saves to lead the No. 16 Indiana Hoosiers women's water polo team (15-7, 2-0 CWPA West) to their second consecutive CWPA Western Division victory on Saturday, defeating Mercyhurst 11-2 in the Fluid Five at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center.
Carson and fellow senior Kelly Palmberg were honored prior to the contest for their contributions to the program.
"It's always a great feeling to pick up a win on senior night," said Indiana head coach Barry King. "We did a lot of good things on the defensive end out there and I thought that really fed into our offense."
Along with Köhli's five markers, the Hoosiers received one goal each from Kara Butler, Hanna Eimstad, Kym King, Nicole Redder, Jenna Roe, and Lauren Wyckoff.
Redder netted the first score of the contest at the 7:08 mark of the opening quarter, capitalizing on a power play and finding the net after an assist by Wyckoff. The Hoosiers struggled to find their rhythm following the opening goal, but got it back late in the quarter with a breakaway goal by Köhli.
After giving up a five-meter conversion to Mercyhurst to make it a 2-1 Indiana lead at the end of the quarter, the Hoosiers would take control in convincing fashion, reeling off five straight goals in the second period. Wyckoff converted on a five-meter shot 17 seconds into the quarter after Butler earned the foul while battling in the post. Köhli followed that up with a pair of goals to increase the Hoosier lead to 5-1. Indiana would continue to control the action to close out the half with goals by Eimstad and King to separate from the Lakers.
The Hoosiers picked up where they left off to start the second half with Wyckoff finding Köhli, who fired in a goal nine seconds into the period. Köhli then dished off to Butler for a goal to give Indiana a 9-1 advantage. The Lakers scored their second and final goal of the game at the 3:32 mark of the third, converting on one of their 11 power play attempts.
Köhli closed out the third with her fifth goal, nailing the back of the net with a skip shot from deep. Köhli's barrage marks the third time this season that she has notched five or more goals in a single game. It also brings her single-season total to 67, which passes Kristin Stanford for fourth on the single-season scoring list. She is ten shy of Brooke Zimmerman's school record 77 goals.
Carson continued to control the cage on the defensive end for the Hoosiers during the second half, making a wide-range of stops to keep the Lakers from mounting a charge. The 12 save performance is the fourth double-digit game for Carson on the season. Carson has 597 saves for her career, which is one shy of Jackie Pyrz for third on the Indiana career saves list.
Roe scored the only goal for either team during the final eight minutes, scoring on a nifty lob that sailed past Mercyhurst's Hope Rozelle.
Indiana will wrap up the Fluid Five with a 10:15 a.m. ET game against Wagner, followed by a 1:30 p.m. ET meeting with Cal State East Bay.
