BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Second-half goals from Will Bruin and Joe Tolen were the difference as the Indiana men's soccer team erased a 1-0 deficit for a 2-1 victory over the Louisville Cardinals in today's spring season opener on Jerry Yeagley Field at Armstrong Stadium.
"I think we saw some good things out there," said first-year head coach Todd Yeagley. "I think it was a tale of two halves and we really came out in the second half and did some nice things offensively."
Indiana had an opportunity to be up 2-0 20 minutes into the match as Bruin headed a shot off the crossbar at 10:25, then put another header, this time off the right post, back into play at 20:46. With the game still scoreless, it was the Cardinals that took a 1-0 lead as Gerardo Chavez crossed a ball into Buck Tufty, who was waiting in front of the net and sent home a low shot for the score at 33:30.
Louisville held a 6-3 lead in shot attempts at the break, with the Hoosiers taking four corner kicks to the Cardinals' three.
Bruin finally broke through for his first goal of the spring season at 54:23 thanks to a well-played ball from Daniel Kelly. Kelly made a solo run up the right side before serving the ball into Bruin, who took one touch and sent a low roller in past U of L goalkeeper David Stockum. Bruin finished the day with a game-high four shots.
Tolen broke the deadlock at 84:35 after being on the receiving end of a thru ball from Bruin. Bruin took the run up the middle and thought about taking the shot himself, but as a pair of defenders closed in on him he saw Tolen make a run to his left and sent a perfectly weighted pass in, leaving Tolen to take the easy shot for the score.
The Hoosiers finished with nine shots to Louisville's 13, and took seven corner kicks compared to eight for the Cardinals. Tommy Meyer had a pair of shots for IU, along with one each from Matt Wiet and Alec Purdie.
Indiana is back in action on April 9 as it plays host to Cincinnati as part of the Indiana Soccer Coaches Symposium. Match time is 7:30 p.m. on Jerry Yeagley Field at Armstrong Stadium.
