YORKTOWN, Ind. - IU Volleyball started off their spring schedule by taking second place and winning three of four matches at the 2010 Munciana Collegiate Invite.
After several changes to the playing field, the end result was three pools of three teams in each. Indiana was joined by Kentucky and IPFW in their pool while the six additional schools in the competition were: Dayton, Purdue, Indianapolis, Michigan State, Western Kentucky and Indiana Tech.
Each match in pool play consisted of two 25-point sets. If the sets were split, total points were used as the tiebreaker. Following pool play, the teams were matched up in a trio of new three-team pools based on the results from the first two matches.
The Hoosiers began the event by defeating the Mastodons of IPFW 25-15, 28-26. Indiana then rebounded from a 25-20 opening-set loss to Kentucky, and blasted the Wildcats 25-14 in the second stanza. With the 45-39 total points advantage over UK, the Hoosiers were winners of their pool and would then face the top teams of the other two pools.
First up was a contest against Big Ten foe Michigan State in which the schools each won one set by a 25-23 tally. For the second round of pool play, the tiebreaker was tossed out the window and a 15-point third set was played to determine the winner. Indiana took the final set against the Spartans, 17-15.
In the last match of the tournament, the Hoosiers at 3-0 faced the also unbeaten Dayton Flyers for the team championship. In the end it was UD who came out on top, however, winning 25-19, 25-18.
The Munciana Collegiate Invite was the first of four consecutive weekends of competition for the Hoosiers this spring. Next up is a tournament at the University of Cincinnati on Saturday, April 3. Indiana is scheduled to play Louisville, Ohio and Cincinnati that day inside Fifth Third Arena. More details will be available later this week right here at IUHoosiers.com.
