Elite Eight Game Notes
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -
The No. 18 Indiana Hoosiers (7-4) will compete in their home pool for the first time this season as they host one of the most anticipated events on the 2010 schedule, the Elite Eight, on March 6-7 at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center. The tournament features five teams currently ranked in the Varsity Top 20 Poll released by the CWPA. Indiana will take on Brown in the first round of the event at 11:10 a.m. on Saturday, with the victor moving on to face the winner of the Michigan-Bucknell matchup. The other side of the bracket features Hartwick-Princeton and Maryland-Harvard. By agreement among the coaches, the consolation games, if possible, will be set up to prevent Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) divisional opponents (North, South, West) from playing each other.

BISON INVITE REVIEW
Indiana is coming off a perfect 4-0 weekend at the Bison Invitational on Feb. 13-14 in Lewisburg, Pa. The Hoosiers are riding a six game winning streak as they head into the Elite Eight. They defeated Marist for the second consecutive weekend, while also picking up wins over Villanova and Siena. The most impressive performance of the weekend came in a win against tournament host Bucknell. The Hoosiers jumped out of the gates quickly, building an 8-2 halftime lead and cruising to a 13-7 victory.
FAMILIAR FOE
The Hoosiers are familiar with first round opponent Brown University, after clashing with the Bears twice during the 2009 season. Each battle was highly contested as the teams were separated by a single score in both. Indiana won the first meeting at the Aztec Invitational on March 20 by a score of 9-8. The Hoosiers led by three goals with 2:52 to play in the fourth quarter before Brown rallied to shrink the deficit to one in the final minute. The teams then met in the first round at the Eastern Championship on April 24 where the Bears came out victorious in a back and forth affair, 8-7. The postseason encounter featured five ties and four lead changes. The Hoosiers rallied in the final period after goals by Jakie Köhli and Nicole Redder brought Indiana within one with three minutes to play, but Brown held off the charge to pick up the crucial victory.
HOOSIER HISTORY AT THE ELITE TOURNAMENT
Indiana has competed in one of the two Elite events as they took part in the 2008 Elite Six in College Park, Md. where the Hoosiers swept all four games in the tournament against Brown, Maryland, Princeton, and Hartwick.
HOOSIERS IN THE POLLS
Indiana maintained the No. 18 spot in the Varsity Top 20 Poll released on March 3 by the CWPA. The Hoosiers have been ranked as high as No. 16 this season and have been in the Varsity Top 20 each week. Indiana is ranked No. 3 in the CWPA Poll, behind Michigan and Hartwick. First round opponent, Brown, landed in the No. 4 position this week.
ACCURATE ATTACKER
Sophomore Jakie Köhli continues to find the net at a remarkable pace, firing in a team-high 37 goals through 11 games, but her precision might be even more impressive as she is scoring on 56 percent her shots attempted. Köhli has also netted three or more goals in eight games this season.
THEFT DUET
Köhli and junior Nicole Redder have made a habit of thwarting opposing offensive attacks as they have both collected over 20 steals this season. Köhli leads the team with 26 takeaways, while Redder has 21. The pair grabbed a combined 14 steals at the Bison Invitational. Redder currently has 136 career steals, which puts her in a tie with Maggie Hannon (2006-2009) for ninth on the Indiana all-time list. She needs seven to join Janis Pardy (2004-2006) for eighth.
UP THE LIST
Senior Katie Carson and sophomore Cassie Wyckoff are both in position to move up the Indiana career saves list in the near future. Carson has racked up 541 saves through 78 games played during her three-plus seasons at Indiana. She is currently fourth on the all-time list, 57 behind Jackie Pyrz (2005-2008).
Wyckoff, the February 15 Western Division Defensive Player of the Week, has 269 saves through 35 games. She is 42 saves from catching Kate Toole for the fifth spot. Wyckoff has notched double-digit saves in four games this season and has a team-high 74 saves on the year.
FIRST TIMER
Junior Jenna Roe recorded her first two goals as a Hoosier at the Bison Invitational, with both scores coming in the fourth quarter in the 11-2 win over Villanova. Roe also dished out the first two assists of her Hoosier career in the 16-5 win against Siena.
HOOSIER HELPERS
Four Hoosiers recorded six or more assists at the Bison Invitational, led by junior Lauren Wyckoff with seven. Jakie Köhli, Kelly Palmberg, and Nicole Redder each dished out six. Wyckoff leads the Hoosiers in the assist department with 14 on the season, including a career-high-tying four in the 13-7 win over Bucknell. Palmberg and Redder each also tied their career-high with three assists in a game during the Bison Invite.
