BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -
Sophomore Cassie Wyckoff has been named the March 8 Western Division Defensive Player of the Week, announced today by the CWPA, after posting 24 saves in 64 minutes of action while allowing eight goals during the No. 18 Indiana Hoosiers' run to third place at the Elite Eight.
The honor marks the second Defensive Player of the Week award that she has received in the last month as she also earned the accolade on February 15 for her play at the Bison Invitational.
In the first round against No. 17 Brown, Wyckoff consistently stymied the Bear offense on her way to 10 saves on 24 shot attempts. She also collected one steal and anchored the stingy Hoosier defense as they allowed only one goal as Indiana cruised to a 9-1 win. The eight-goal spread marks the largest margin of victory in any Brown-Indiana water polo game erasing the previous mark of six goals set on March 1, 2008 in a 14-8 Hoosiers' win.
Wyckoff turned in another stellar performance against division rival No. 8 Michigan, tying a season-high with 14 saves on 28 Wolverine shots. Her crucial saves helped the Hoosiers control the first three periods before a three-goal onslaught from Michigan in the final quarter ultimately decided the contest as the Hoosiers fell 7-6 in the semifinal. Her save total against Michigan marks the sixth time this season that she has achieved double-digit stops in the cage.
Wyckoff has gotten the starting nod 10 times this season for the Hoosiers, accruing totals of 98 saves in 274 total minutes. She has recorded 293 saves during her career, which lands leaves her 19 stops from moving past Kate Toole for fifth on the Indiana all-time saves list.
The CWPA also recognized fellow sophomore Jakie Köhli on the March 8 Western Division Player of the Week Honor Roll for her effort at the Elite Eight. Köhli tallied seven goals, two assists, three steals, and four kick-outs earned over the weekend. She leads the team with 44 goals on the season and also has a team-high 29 steals. It marks the second time this season that Köhli has been on the Honor Roll, and she also took home the February 8 Western Division Player of the Week award.
