BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Conducting tournament play on their home course for the first time this season, the Indiana women's golf team is enjoying the home cooking as it leads after 36 holes of the 54-hole IU Invitational at the IU Golf Course in Bloomington.
Indiana posted scores of 304 and 291 for a two-round total of 595. The Hoosiers' second-round score of 291 is the low round of the tournament heading into the final day. Iowa State is in second, four strokes off the lead at 599. Colorado (600) and Michigan (600) are tied for third, with Illinois State fifth (601). Tournament play concludes Sunday with 18 holes on a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. ET.
"In the second round I think we relaxed a bit and played golf," said head coach Clint Wallman. "We didn't over think things. What stood out for me today was we had a good demeanor and mental approach to the game. When we made a mistake, we moved on and converted several of our misses into par saves."
Senior Laura Nochta is currently tied for third with rounds of 75 and 71 for a score of 146. Nochta's second-round 1-under 71 was her seventh under par round of the year. She is aiming for her fifth top-five finish this season.
Freshman Pamela Burneski is also in position to make a run at the top of the leaderboard as she is also tied for third with scores of 73 in both the first and second rounds. The 73 is her lowest round since also carding a 73 in the final round of the Challenge at Onion Creek in November.
Senior Kellye Belcher is tied for 20th after carding a 152 (79-73) Saturday. Freshman Jacqueline Yanch is tied for 28th with scores of 79 and 74 (153). Yanch has been within two strokes of par in two of her last three rounds.
Junior Lauren Giesecke is on her way to the best outing of her season after identical rounds of 77 Saturday to sit tied for 32nd (154). Giesecke has scored 77 or better in each of her last three rounds of play.
Freshman Kate Coons is tied for 28th with a score of 153 (77-76). Junior Cecilia Orevik is tied for 78 at 165 (82-83). Competing in their first collegiate tournaments, freshmen Molly O'Connor (88-84) and Kylie Wierks (88-92) are 85th and 89th, respectively.
