Hoosiers Fall in Tight Contest with No. 39 Minnesota

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana fell 4-3 to the No. 39 Minnesota Golden Gophers. The loss moves the Hoosiers to 3-3 in conference on the season. Indiana was led by stellar doubles play and Jeremy Langer scoring a win over a ranked opponent. The Hoosiers are 12-6 on the season.
IU got the doubles point, sweeping all three matches. After falling to a 1-2 deficit, Lachlan Ferguson and Josh MacTaggart asserted their dominance, winning seven straight games for the 8-2 win at number one to defeat the No. 27 doubles team in the country. Santiago Gruter and Langer won at number two, clinching the point with an 8-4 victory. Isade Juneau and Alexander van Gils completed the sweep with a 8-7 (7-4) win at number three.
Gruter won convincingly (6-3, 6-1) at number four, moving the Hoosier lead to 2-0, but that was when Minnesota came charging back.
The Gophers logged wins at number five, then number one and then number three to take the lead 3-2, and both matches left on court headed to a third set.
Langer struck first winning his third set for a victory over No. 105 Tobias Wernet. Langer won by a 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 final tally. The attention turned to the number six singles match with the score knotted at 3-3.
The match served as a fitting conclusion to the tightly-contested team competition as it was down to the wire throughout. After IU's Will Kendall took the first set 7-5, Brendan Ruddock fought back for a 7-6 (7-3) win in the second. In the third, it was just as tight as the two players once again battled to a tiebreaker. Ruddock prevailed 7-5 in the tiebreaker for an overall 5-7, 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-5) win. The singles match lasted more than three hours.
