BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana men's soccer team announced its 2010 fall schedule today, with the lineup featuring eight home matches and competition against nine teams that competed in the 2009 NCAA Tournament.
"We are excited to announce an exciting and challenging 2010 fall schedule," said first-year head coach Todd Yeagley. "Our non-conference schedule will be one of the toughest in the nation as we compete against perennial powers UCLA, Duke, Cal, Notre Dame and Creighton just to name a few. Competing in the Big Ten Conference, which I feel is the most competitive conference top to bottom, provides for exciting match-ups week in and week out. Our players, staff, and wonderful fans and supporters are looking forward to an exciting and successful 2010 fall campaign."
The Hoosiers will play three exhibition matches in preparation for the regular season, beginning with Xavier on Jerry Yeagley Field at Armstrong Stadium on Sunday, Aug. 22 at 7:30 p.m. Indiana will then take part in the annual National Soccer Festival in Ft. Wayne, Ind., taking on ACC power Duke on Friday, Aug. 27 (7:30 p.m.) and Denver on Sunday, Aug. 29 at noon. All seven Big Ten teams are schedule to participate in the National Soccer Festival this year.
The regular season kicks off with the annual adidas/IU Credit Union Classic on Sept. 3 and 5. Notre Dame, UCLA and California will join IU, with the Hoosiers taking on the Golden Bears Friday night at 7:30 p.m. This will be the first meeting between the programs since 2003, a 3-0 victory for Indiana in Bloomington. The Hoosiers lead the all-time series, 4-1. The Hoosiers wrap-up tournament play on Sunday against the Bruins. This will be the 17th meeting between the schools, with Indiana holding a 9-7 advantage. Indiana has won the last two meetings, a 1-0 victory in the 2007 adidas/IU Credit Union Classic, and a 3-0 win in Los Angeles in 2008.
Indiana travels to the Mike Berticelli Memorial Tournament at Notre Dame on Sept. 10 and 12, facing Cal Poly on the 10th at 5 p.m., and the Drake Bulldogs on the 12th at 11:30 a.m. This is IU's first-ever meeting with Cal Poly, while Indiana is 1-0 against Drake after a 2-0 win in 1994. Drake was 16-7-2 last year, advancing to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament.
The Hoosiers begin a three-game east coast swing on Friday, Sept. 17 when they take on the Brown Bears at 7 p.m. The teams have played each other once prior, a 5-0 Indiana victory in Providence, R.I. in 1999. Brown advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament in 2009. Indiana will then head to UMass on Sunday, Sept. 19 for the first-ever meeting with the Minutemen.
After a few days back in Bloomington the Hoosiers return to the road for their Big Ten opener at Penn State on Friday, Sept. 24 at 7 p.m. Penn State advanced to the Big Ten Tournament championship game last season, but Indiana leads the series with the Nittany Lions 26-10-3 all time, including a 2-1 win last season in Bloomington. Evansville visits Bloomington on Sept. 29 to close out the month of September. Indiana is 10-0-1 against the Purple Aces in their last 11 meetings and leads the series, 21-4-3.
The month of October begins with another Big Ten matchup as the Wisconsin Badgers come to town on Oct. 3 for a 1 p.m. match. It will be an IU Soccer family reunion with Wisconsin head coach and former IU player and coach John Trask making his first trip to Bloomington with the Badgers, along with former IU player and coach and current UW assistant coach Phil Presser. Indiana is 34-3-4 all-time against the Badgers, including wins in the regular season and Big Ten Tournament in 2009.
Regional foe Notre Dame visits on Oct. 6 at 7:30 p.m. Indiana has won three straight in the series with the Fighting Irish, including a 3-0 triumph in South Bend last season. Nonconference play continues on Oct. 9 as the Hoosiers travel to Omaha, Neb. to take on national power Creighton. These two teams last met in 2007, and Indiana is looking to even up the series with the Bluejays at 3-all.
Indiana's third Big Ten match of the season takes place on Oct. 16 against the Michigan Wolverines at 7:30 p.m. The Hoosiers hold a 13-1-1 advantage in the series and are riding a three-game win streak against the Wolverines, posting a 1-0 win in Ann Arbor last season. That match is followed by back-to-back road games at Kentucky (Oct. 20- 7 p.m.) and Michigan State (Oct. 24- 1 p.m.). The Hoosiers are 21-1-2 against the Wildcats, most recently posting a 3-0 victory in Bloomington, in 2009. Indiana is looking to snap a three-game losing streak at the hands of the Spartans but still leads the all-times series 34-4-2.
October wraps up with home matches against Butler (Oct. 27- 7 p.m.) and Northwestern (Oct. 31- 2:30 p.m.). Butler defeated Indiana during the regular season last year, but the Hoosiers got their revenge with a 1-0 win over the Bulldogs in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Northwestern has become a dominant force in Big Ten play, but the Hoosiers have won three of the last four meetings and lead the series 23-2-1.
Regular season play concludes on Nov. 6 with a 1 p.m. match at Ohio State. The Buckeyes are the defending Big Ten champions and the Hoosiers are looking to avenge a pair of defeats at the hands of OSU last season. Indiana still holds a dominating 35-3-3 advantage in the series.
The 2010 Big Ten Tournament will take place Nov. 11-14 at Penn State in State College, Pa. Penn State last hosted the tournament in 2002, while Indiana is looking for its first tournament title since 2006. First-round action of the 2010 NCAA Tournament is scheduled for Nov. 18, culminating in the College Cup Dec. 10-12 in Santa Barbara, Calif.
