BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - A goal from Andy Adlard with less than two minutes to play in regulation salvaged a 1-1 tie for the Indiana men's soccer team in a spring match with the IUPUI Jaguars Wednesday night on Jerry Yeagley Field at Armstrong Stadium.
Adlard's goal came as time was ticking down and the Hoosiers hurried to get of a corner kick, one of 14 on the night for IU. Alec Purdie's kick went to Cameron Jordan at the top of the box, and Jordan played the ball up to Caleb Konstanski on the right side. Konstanski sent the ball across the goalmouth to the back post, where Adlard touched it in for the tying score at 88:40.
"There were a lot of positives tonight," said head coach Todd Yeagley. "When you get good scoring opportunities, that is a positive. I thought we had about 10 really good scoring chances that we just weren't able to finish. IUPUI is a disciplined team and they are tough to play through. Some good things were created offensively and we will learn from that.
"I don't think we are still there yet as much as we need to be in the first half. That is a trend that we need to address."
It looked as though the Jaguars would walk away with the victory when Emile Garcia scored in the 84th minute, putting home a corner kick from Michael Wignot. That was one of just three second-half shots for the Jaguars as the Hoosiers out-shot them by a 13-3 margin in the period.
It was another night of close calls for sophomore forward Will Bruin as he led the team with eight shot attempts, including one that bounced off the post and to IUPUI goalkeeper Tyler Keever late in the second half. With 15:38 to play in the first half, Bruin collected a ball from Tyler McCarroll on the right side but sent his header off the post.
Freshman Jacob Bushue earned the start in the midfield and had a scoring opportunity less than five minutes into the match when his toe-poke on the ball was stopped by an IUPUI defender. Bushue finished with two shots on the night, both of which were on goal. Rich Balchan had three shot attempts, with four from Adlard, and one each from Tommy Meyer, Kevin Bick, Alec Purdie and McCarroll.
Indiana finished with a 22-11 shot advantage, but the Jaguars took four shots to IU's two in the two 10-minute overtime periods. The Hoosiers took 14 corner kicks to the Jaguars' four, and it was a relatively clean match with just 13 fouls between the two schools.
Indiana returns to action this Friday as it travels to the Shindigz National Soccer Festival on Saturday, April 17 in Ft. Wayne, Ind. The Hoosiers will take on in-state foe Notre Dame at 7 p.m. at Parkview Field, home of the Ft. Wayne TinCaps. This will be the first non-baseball athletic event to be held at Parkview Field, which opened in 2009.
