The No. 15 Indiana Hoosiers women's water polo team will clash with a pair of highly ranked teams in Tempe, Ariz. this weekend to wrap up regular season play. The Hoosiers (17-6, 2-1 CWPA West) will take on No. 14 San Diego State on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. PT. Indiana will then square off against the host No. 9 Arizona State at 10:00 a.m. PT on Sunday.
SCHEDULE
Saturday, April 17
2:30 p.m. PT - #15 Indiana vs. #14 San Diego State (18-12)
Sunday, April 18
10:00 a.m. PT - #15 Indiana at #9 Arizona State (15-11)
WEEK IN REVIEW
The Hoosiers have been out of action for a week following their 6-4 loss at No. 8 Michigan on April 3 in Ann Arbor. The contest was televised nationally by the Big Ten Network. Both teams played their traditional hard-nosed defense, but ultimately the Hoosiers could not find their rhythm offensively. Indiana was 1-13 on power play opportunities against the Wolverines. The loss slid the Hoosiers into the No. 2 seed for the CWPA Western Championship on April 24 in Ann Arbor, where they will take on No. 3 seed Mercyhurst in the first round at 11:30 a.m. ET. No 1 seed Michigan will battle No. 4 seed Gannon in the other first round game.
COMPETITIVE STRETCH
The Hoosiers have won 11 of their last 15 contests, including victories over Brown (9-1) and Pacific (10-9 OT), both of which were ranked No. 17 when the teams faced off. Indiana's four losses have come by a total of nine goals to teams currently ranked among the top seven in the Varsity Top 20.
LEAGUE LEADERS
Sophomore Jakie Kohli is currently leading the CWPA in goals scored according to the NCAA Water Polo Statistics Web Site. Kohli has 71 goals, which is six shy of the single-season school record set by Brooke Zimmerman in 2008. Kohli is also fifth nationally and second in the CWPA with 64 steals. Junior Nicole Redder is fourth in scoring among CWPA players with 46 goals. Junior Lauren Wyckoff's 34 assists is good for fifth in the conference. Sophomore goalkeeper Cassie Wyckoff is second in the CWPA with 165 saves.
MAN UP!
The Hoosiers racked up a season-high 15 earned exclusions/five-meter fouls in the loss at Michigan. It marked the sixth time this season that Indiana has earned double-digit exclusions. Junior Lauren Wyckoff drew a career-high nine kick-outs, including one five-meter foul. She leads the team with 53 on the season. Senior Kelly Palmberg earned a pair of kick-outs in the contest. The team that can execute power play conversions could prove to be a key factor if the two teams meet in the postseason, as both teams are a combined 4-29 during six-on-five chances in the two rivalry games played this season.
SCHOLASTIC ACHIEVEMENT
The Indiana University Varsity Club recognized student-athletes from each of IU's 24 varsity sports at its annual Scholastic Achievement Awards dinner on Friday, April 9, and Kelsey Campbell collected the honor for the women's water polo team for her excellent work in the classroom. "Kelsey is just a tremendous student-athlete, said head coach of water polo, Barry King. "She is a real inspiration to the rest of her teammates for how hard she works in and out of the pool."
CLOSE CALLS IN 2009
If last season is any indication, the upcoming two game slate in Tempe will not be lacking in excitement and high quality water polo. On March 22, 2009, the Hoosiers took a No. 18 ranking into the Aztec Invitational where they led No. 5 San Diego State early in the third quarter before giving up a late rally to lose 9-6. Indiana also fell 10-9 in overtime to No. 7 Arizona State at the Stanford Invite early in the 2009 campaign.
