TEMPE, Ariz. -
The No. 15 Indiana Hoosiers (18-9) fell to No. 9 Arizona State, 18-8, in Tempe, Ariz. on Sunday to finish regular season play. The Sun Devils scored the game's first four goals and led 9-3 at the half, and it was too much for the Hoosiers to overcome.
Kate Dunn led Indiana in scoring with a career-high three goals in the loss. Kelsey Campbell and Jakie Köhli each notched a pair of goals. Kara Butler also finished with one goal for the Hoosiers. Köhli joined Brooke Zimmerman for second on the Indiana single-season scoring list with 76 and one shy of Zimmerman's record of 77 set in 2008.
Cassie Wyckoff started the game and played one half in the cage, recording five saves on 19 Arizona State shot attempts. Katie Carson came on in the second half and grabbed a save and a steal.
Arizona State scored on seven of their 11 power play opportunities, including four in the first half to help jump out in front.
Campbell scored the first Indiana goal at the 6:57 mark of the second quarter when she launched a shot into the upper left corner of the cage to pull the Hoosiers within three. The Hoosiers would not get any closer as the Sun Devils did not allow Indiana to gain any momentum, scoring six goals in the second period to mount a 9-3 halftime lead.
Dunn scored the second and third Hoosier goals during the quarter. The first coming after Hanna Eimstad found her open at two meters for the score, followed by Dunn firing in a shot that deflected off the crossbar in for the goal.
The Sun Devils scored the first two goals of the third period to take an 11-3 lead with 2:57 remaining in the quarter. Kym King found Köhli open 16 seconds later on a power play, which she converted for the score. The two teams would exchange a pair of goals to end the third, with Dunn and Campbell finding the net for the Hoosiers. Dunn scored on a power play, then Campbell followed with a long-range goal after the assist by Dunn to make it a 13-6 deficit heading into the fourth.
Köhli and Butler scored goals in the final period, although the Hoosiers could not find the answer on the defensive end, allowing five Arizona State scores in the last eight minutes to finish the game 18-8.
The Hoosiers will begin postseason play at the CWPA Western Championship in Ann Arbor, Mich. on Saturday, April 24. Indiana will be the No. 2 seed and they will take on No. 3 seed Mercyhurst at 11:30 a.m. ET. The winner will meet the victor between No. 1 seed Michigan and No. 4 seed Gannon for the title. The top two teams advance to the CWPA Eastern Championship in College Park, Md. on April 30.
