BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana University Vice President and Director of Athletics Fred Glass lent a helping hand to Building Tomorrow on Tuesday, taking part in the organization's "Bike to Uganda" charity event which is taking place during Little 500 week on the IU campus.
Building Tomorrow is a non-profit organization that raises money to build primary schools in Uganda. With $45,000, a school can be built to accommodate 325 kids who would otherwise have no access to primary education. The capstone fund-raising event is called "Bike to Uganda." The aim is to get supporters to generate donations for each mile logged on stationary bikes located just north of Ballantine Hall on the IU campus. For the five-day event the organizers hope to log the distance from Bloomington to Kampala, Uganda, which is 7,710 miles. For those unable to bike, they can also purchase a shirt for $10 with the proceeds going toward the fund-raising effort.
"My son, Joey, who is a senior at Marquette, is friends with one of the organizers here and through him they got in touch with me," Glass said. "It sounded like a wonderful event and I wanted to get involved. Access to education is a global issue and I am more than happy to support Indiana students in their efforts to make a difference."
