WEEK IN REVIEW
The Hoosiers traveled to Tempe, Ariz. on April 17-18 for a pair of matchups against highly ranked opponents, No. 14 San Diego State and No. 9 Arizona State. It was a tale of two games for the cream and crimson as Indiana jumped on SDSU from the start, opening the game on a 6-0 run and cruising to an 11-7 victory. The Hoosiers struggled in their regular season finale against Arizona State, falling behind 3-0 early and losing 18-8 to the host Sun Devils. Jakie Köhli led the Hoosiers in scoring for the weekend with five goals, to go along with five steals. Katie Carson made 11 saves during 32 total minutes of the two game slate, including 10 in the second half against the Aztecs. Cassie Wyckoff also played 32 minutes between the pipes, collecting nine saves and two steals.
TWO FOR THE RECORD
Jakie Köhli needs two goals to surpass Brooke Zimmerman's 77 goals and set a new Indiana single-season scoring record. Köhli has recorded two or more goals in 23 games this season, and she has had 15 hat tricks. She is currently third in the CWPA in scoring, behind Brown's Sarah Glick (82) and Lauren Presant (80).
Köhli has done more than find the net with regularity in 2010, as she collected her second CWPA Western Division Defensive Player of the Week honor on April 19. Köhli grabbed five steals during the two games in Tempe, which gives her a conference-leading 69 takeaways on the year. She also leads the CWPA in points (goals and assists combined) with 103.
FAST AND FURIOUS
Indiana stunned No. 14 San Diego State with an early run, scoring on six of their first seven shots taken during the opening five minutes of the contest on their way to the 11-7 win. Lauren Wyckoff scored three of her game-high four goals during the first quarter flurry, while Hanna Eimstad, Jakie Köhli, and Nicole Redder added the other scores.
GETTING IT DUNN
Although the Hoosiers fell to No. 9 Arizona State, Kate Dunn had a career-high three goals and numerous highlights. Dunn scored a pair of goals in the second period, and followed it up by filling the stat sheet in the third stanza. The Worthington, Ohio native notched a power play goal with 1:48 left in the third, then dished out an assist to Kelsey Campbell 39 seconds later. Dunn ended the quarter with a come from behind steal as a Sun Devil closed in near the five-meter line on a breakaway.
HOOSIERS IN THE POLLS
Indiana remains at No. 15 in the Varsity Top 20 released on April 21 by the CWPA. The Hoosiers have been ranked in the Varsity Top 20 throughout the 2010 season and have been at No. 15 for four consecutive weeks. Indiana remains at No. 3 in the CWPA Poll, behind Michigan and Hartwick.
HEAD COACH Barry King SAYS...
On postseason play:
"They know this is about winning championships. This is where all the talk of goals and expectations start back at the beginning of the year. Winning the championship is the goal. Our expectation is that we're competing and winning that championship."
On the key factor at the Western Division Championship:
"The focus on the power play still needs to be there. We need to score on our chances in the power play. We keep proving to ourselves that we know what we're doing in the half-court offense to be able to draw them. If those are a third of our attempts on the cage they need to be organized and efficient."
