MADISON, Wis. - Fighting through brutal weather conditions, the Indiana women's golf team finished fifth with a team score of 1,205 at the 2010 Big Ten Women's Golf Championships at University Ridge Golf Course in Madison, Wis.
The round began with a steady rain that would continue on and off throughout the 18 holes, along with a biting wind on the front nine and temperatures in the 40s. Purdue won its third consecutive Big Ten title with a score of 1,158. They were followed by Michigan State (1,185), Ohio State (1,189), Wisconsin (1,194), IU, Northwestern (1,206), Minnesota (1,208), Michigan (1,228), Illinois (1,230), Penn State (1,242) and Iowa (1,255). Purdue's Laura Gonzalez was the individual medalist with an 8-under 280.
Indiana's four-round team score of 1,205 is the program's second-lowest Big Ten Championships tally in school history, just behind the 1998 team when it won the conference title with a score of 1,196.
"It was quite a day," said head coach Clint Wallman. "There is no doubt about that. We had pretty good play throughout the lineup. With the conditions that were affecting shots you just could not take anything for granted. We got solid play from Laura, and Lauren came up huge today. Jackie played well, as did Kate.
"Probably the most incredible effort that I saw was out of Pam Burneski, who really couldn't feel her legs due to injury. For her to post a 75 is pretty remarkable.
Senior Laura Nochta finished her Big Ten career with her best-ever finish at the championships, placing tied for seventh with a score of 296 (72-73-75-76). With a par on one, Nochta sank a beautiful put on two to go to -1. She was tripped up with a bogey on three and a double bogey on five. She dropped back to +1 with her second birdie of the round on six but went +1 for the last three holes of the front nine, making the turn at +2. Nochta's game picked up on the back nine with pars on 10 and 12 and a birdie on 11, her third of the day. Three-straight bogeys on 13, 14 and 15 put her score at 4-over par, and that is where she would end the day.
For the second year in a row, Nochta earned second-team All-Big Ten honors.
Freshman Jacqueline Yanch finished her first Big Ten Tournament tied for 14th with a score of 300 (76-71-73-80). Yanch pared one and two before tallying three-straight bogeys on three, four and five. She pared the next three holes but carded a six on the par-5 ninth hole to make the turn at +4. She had pars on 10, 11 and 12 but bogeyed 13 and carded her first double bogey of the tournament with a seven on hole 16. After a par on 17 the day ended with a bogey on 18.
Freshman Pamela Burneski finished tied for 32nd with a score of 308 (80-78-75-75). Burneski, still playing though an injury, was even through six holes. A bogey on seven and a double bogey on nine put her at +3 for the turn. She pared 10 and 12, with a bogey on 11 negated with her first birdie of the day on the par-4 13th hole. That birdie would put her at -1 over the final seven holes to finish the day at 75. For her efforts, Burneski was named Indiana's recepient of the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award.
Freshman Kate Coons tied for 41st after recording a score of 312 (79-75-77-81). After a par on one, Coons birdie two but moved back to even par with a bogey on three. She recorded pars on four and five before another bogey on six dropped her to +1. Seven, eight and nine were also bogeys for Coons, giving her a 40 on the front nine. She bogeyed 10, 11 and 14, dropping to +7 with four holes to play. A bogey on 15 was followed by back-to-back pars on 16 and 17, with the tournament ending with a bogey on 18.
Junior Lauren Giesecke tied for 44th with a tally of 314 (80-81-76-77). Giesecke was +4 after six holes with bogeys on one and five, and a double bogey on four. She took a stroke back with her first birdie of the round on the par-3 eighth hole, but a bogey on nine left her at +4 through nine holes. Giesecke birdied 10 but was hit with a double bogey on 11 and a single on 12. After a par on 13, she recorded her third birdie of the day on 14. A bogey on 15 and a birdie on 16, followed by pars on 17 and 18 put her at even for the final four holes. Her four birdies on the day led the Hoosiers.
Senior Kellye Belcher closed out her Big Ten career finishing 47th with a score of 316 (77-76-75-88). Belcher bogeyed the first hole, followed by pars on two and three. A double bogey on five and single bogey on six put her at +4 through six holes. Seven, eight and nine were a rough stretch for the senior as she went +4 over the span, including a double bogey on nine that put her at +8 overall. Bogeys on 10 and 11, followed by a double bogey on 15 gave her a +12 score heading into the final four holes. She double bogeyed 15 and had extra strokes on 16 and 18 to finish at +16.
Selections for the 2010 NCAA Regionals will be made Monday (April 26) afternoon. Indiana will play host to the Central Regional, May 6-8 at Otter Creek Golf Course in Columbus, Ind.
