BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana women's golf team is one of 24 teams and three individuals selected to participate in the 2010 NCAA Central Regional, May 6-8. Indiana University will serve as host of the Central Regional at Otter Creek Golf Course in Columbus.
"We are very excited to go back to regionals, and it is an added bonus when you are hosting," said head coach Clint Wallman. "Otter Creek is a great course, and it is going to be a great championship. I believe we are just as capable as anyone of shooting low numbers out there. We told the team this is a brand-new, three-round season."
A total of six Big Ten teams advanced to the postseason with Big Ten champion Purdue, Michigan State, Ohio State, Northwestern and Ohio State joining Indiana.
The Hoosiers are coming off a fifth-place finish at the Big Ten Women's Golf Championships last weekend where they posted a four-round score of 1,205. That is the second-lowest Big Ten Championship score in school history. Senior Laura Nochta posted her best-ever Big Ten Championships finish, placing tied for seventh with a score of 296. She was also named an All-Big Ten second-team selection for the second-straight year.
Freshman Jacqueline Yanch also had a solid outing in her first Big Ten Championships, placing tied for 14th with a score of 300. Yanch's score of 71 in round two was the only under-par round of the tournament by an IU golfer.
This is the third time Indiana has been selected to the postseason under the direction of sixth-year head coach Clint Wallman, and the 19th time in school history. The Hoosiers' last regional appearance came in 2008 at the NCAA East Regional in Athens, Ga. Indiana is aiming for its first NCAA Championships appearance since the 2006-07 season, where it finished 24th at the national meet.
Twenty-three other teams will join Indiana at Otter Creek, including No. 2 Arizona State, No. 5 USC, No. 8 Purdue, No. 10 Michigan State, No. 14 Georgia, No. 17 Denver, No. 20 New Mexico, No. 23 Florida State, No. 26 Oklahoma State, No. 28 Louisville, No. 34 Oregon, No. 33 Kent State, No. 40 Northwestern, No. 42 Notre Dame, No. 48 Mississippi, No. 46 San Diego State, No. 52 Baylor, No. 53 Tulsa, No. 55 NC State, No. 85 Illinois State, No. 136 Murray State, No. 204 Detroit and No. 215 Jackson State. Rankings are according to GolfStat. The three individuals also named to the Central Regional field are Ashley Bauer of Michigan, Olivia Lansing of Drake, and Julia Potter of Missouri.
The teams and individuals will play 18 holes on each of the three days of the tournament. The teams will be split into morning and afternoon tee times going off both the 1st and 10th holes.
A total of 369 participants have been selected for regional competition. Of these players, 126 will advance to the championships finals. Eight teams and two individuals will advance from each regional. The West Regional will take place in Palo Alto, Calf., with the East Regional in Greenville, N.C.
The championships finals will be held May 18-21 at the Country Club of Landfall and will be hosted by the University of North Carolina, Wilmington.
